Bogey's paw is bleeding - can you help??

Bogey came back in the house today and promptly got blood everywhere. It's coming from his back paw. I felt it, as much as he'd let me, and I think he tore a nail off. I took a towel and held pressure on the paw until it just about stopped bleeding. It's still bleeding a little bit when he puts pressure on it.

I'm not sure what to do now. He has black hair with tiny curls that makes it really difficult to take a good look at it. Do you think I should soak it for a while, does he need to go to the vet? Put hydrogen peroxcide on it? Wrap that streatchy tape on it to apply pressure?

If you know anything about this, can you reply asap? Thanks.

Do you have one of those sticks men use to stop bleeding? You can try to apply that to the wound. I would think direct pressure would still be best but you may need to hold it on longer.

Can you get a flashlight and look better at this paw? A nail that has completely been ripped out might requrie a stitch or two.

Thanks Dax! I was able to get in there and check and he's completely pulled out one of his nails. I called the vet and they want me to bring him in this afternoon. They said they'll want to give him anti-biotics to avoid an infection.

Grrr...it's always something!

Oh, poor sweetie! This happened to my Cara, too. Outside nail on her right rear foot. I hope Bogey is ok. I'm sure he will be.

pssst: One less nail to clip!

We went to the vet. She said he fractured his nail and it was all the way pulled out including the quick. It may not grow back - that's o.k.

She gave me some solution to dilute and use to soak his foot for 5 minutes twice a day. It's Nolvasan Solution. It's blue.

It's still bleeding a little, but nothing like before.

Thanks everyone who responded. I'm definately going to get a steptic pencil or powder.
