We have a Wheaten that has been scratching almost non stop for maybe a week. It seems to have started out of no where. She has scratched and bitten her hair down to the skin in some spots. We are going to try and get her to the vet tomorrow, but does anyone know what could be causing this?

Allergies, or hot spots come to mind. or has the dog been swimming in chlorine pool, could be allergic. If it's angry red it could be mange. Could be a myriad of things....keep us posted after you see your vet so we can learn too.

someone said if it ws food allergies it would have shown up by now...(this was pm'd to me)..this is not so...dogs can become allergic to certain things they've been used to just like humans....in the same sense we and they can grow out of it also...

What food do you feed? Artificial colorings, corn, and wheat are all major allergens, so if those are in your food, you may want to consider a different brand.
Otherwise, as mentioned, there are SO many sources of allergies. Even something as simple as the laundry detergent we use can cause allergies. |

My Rat Terrier does that and he is allergic to fleas and his food. The best bet is to goto the vet and they will give you medicine to help stop it.

you could also try bathing in a gentle oatmeal shampoo... it could be just dry itchy skin. But I also think that a visit to the vet would be a good idea.

Denali tends to be itchy all the time too. She has allergies, the only thing that helps is not running the heat/air and opening windows. What happens is in our ventalation systems mold and dust builds up, when the a/c or the heat kicks on, it blows these spores into our living environment and just really cycles it. I've been thinking about even trying one of those air purifyer thingys for Denali. She hasn't done well on the allergy meds either
. You could even ask your vet if you could give your dog benedryl to see if that helps.
