Maia is getting spayed
Hi everyone-well, tomorrow morning I take Maia to be spayed
. I'm really nervous about it. I've had dogs neutered, but this is the first female I've had spayed. I take her tomorrow about 10AM and they say I will pick her up about 4pm. I don't know this hospital-its one that the rescue place has all their dogs spayed and neutered by. The person I spoke to first forgot to tell me that she couldn't have any food or water after midnight. I called today and questioned them, and I was correct. It seems like it is a lot of surgery to just do and then send her home. I thought they would keep her overnight to make sure everything is ok. She is a super active dog-keeping her quiet is going to hard-even in her crate. Do the vets ever give you sedatives to help the pups keep calm? I'm afraid she'll do something to tear her stitches. I'm also very nervous about the anesthesia. I got lucky and my boss is going to let me take Monday off-do you think by then she should have started healing enough to be ok while I'm at work ( I'll speed home during my lunch break to check on her). Sorry to make this so long-hopefully this time tomorrow I will be telling you that everything is done and it ends up ok. THanks for your support-I know I worry too much! Kathy and Maia

They can give pain pills and sedatives if you ask. Kota limited herself. She was groggy at first and just laid there so I laid with her and petted her little face till she came round.. Then she walked slow for a couple of days but otherwise she was OK. I'm glad Kota got to come home the same day because surgery is stressful enough but being away from home just adds to that. So I'm glad she could do her recovery at home.

I know it's easier said than done, but try not to be nervous. I had my 2 girls done the same day and picked them up in the afternoon. They did limit themselves and they were fine.
Like SWC said, ASK the vet for something. Tell them you're concerned because Maia's active. She'll be fine by Tuesday. It's great that you're staying home with her Monday. You'll be amazed at how quickly she heals. Sending Mellow Vibes...

I've had 2 dogs spayed and neither had any problems! They both seemed able to regulate their activity levels approprately and neither bothered with their incisions. The biggest thing I had to watch for was blocking stair access the day they had their surgery because they were a bit wonky from the anasethetic.
Be thinking about you and Maia today!!

When I had Daisy spayed they kept her overnight just because it was their policy. They gave me some pain pills and I think I just gave her one because she didn't seem to need them. She was a little sleepy but was bouncing around the next day (second day after surgery). I just had to watch the little monkey when we went for our walks she did her usual when another dog came along - lie down on her back spread eagled. Shameless little hussy!!!! Anyway I was quite concerned before but it was really a piece of cake - no problems.

I just spayed Gemma but the whole experience was rather traumatic for this anxious mommy. I sent her in at 9am, and the vet told me I should be able to collect her at 3.30pm. But at 1pm, the vet called and said I can collect her at 2pm. I later learnt that Gemma made a real racket when she woke up to find herself caged and with an Elizabeth collar on.
That day, it seemed to hurt her to lie or sit, and poor Gemma was so tired she nodded off while standing! Finally she managed to sleep lying on my lap, and left a teeny bit of blood stains on my pants, which freaked me out. ![]() She was back to her normal self after eating a painkiller that night, but the wound was inflamed and swollen and felt hard to the touch. It took 3 weeks for the swelling to subside. The vet said inflamation is usually caused by the dog running and jumping, but I didn't let her out to run; she only moved around the house. Anyway, she's back to normal now, for which I am glad. |
