Ella is chewing at herself

Hey guys, got a problem. Ella has been chewing at herself (legs, tail, butt area, back) and needless to say it doesn't sound pleasant. I have looked at the areas she has been chewing at and I can't see anything.

I guess my question is, is it fleas and if so how would I be able to tell? If it isn't that then what could it be? I plan on taking her to vet on Monday to find out for sure, but if anyone has any ideas on what I can do to soothe her till then it would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Well if it is Fleas you will be able to see then if you turn her on her belly and look in the arm pit areas and on the belly. They are little tiny black specs. It also could be Dry skin and all you need to give her is a skin Moisterizer, at a pet store.

If not fleas, it could be an allergy. Have you changed anything? Her food? Had the yard sprayed? New cleaning products used on her bed?

I was thinking more along the lines of an allergy as well.

Do you have any new detergents around the house?
Is she currently on any flea preventative?

Allergies here too. Or dry skin.Sometimes a little oil in their food helps also.

To rule out fleas...take a fine toothed comb and gently comb her with it Any small, black, gritty things are flea excrement...or you may see an actual flea. Though I really doubt this is the case.

My guess is allergies.

Benadryl(antihistamine) works great for itching. I use it on my dogs when they have an allergy flair up. It is dosed by the weight per ml. Unfortunately I don't remember the ?ml per lbs. I always have to call my Vet.

Is she just chewing? Or is she pawing, etc??
My mini dachshund has a really bad grooming problem, she has to chew and groom her butt, legs, tail, paws, everything, 2/3 times a day. It gets really annoying too, she's not very quiet about it. Right now, she's grooming her hip.
Has she just started this?

This is what Denali has. Denali has allergies. She's allergic to dust and molds that grow in the air vents. As long as I can open up all the windows and such she's fine, but as soon as we have the a/c on or the heat on, it's back to the itchies. We tried switching food to an allergy formula, but because it's environmental allergies it really didn't help all that much.

The best way to find out is by process of ellimination if it is allergies. What's different about her environment that now she seems itchy? The vets can check/test for allergies. Allergies suck - no fun at all!!

If you think it's just boredom chewing you can try putting bitter apple on her, but it is a lot of alcohol that can dry out her skin/fur so you'd want to use it sparringly.

Have you bathed her recently? If so what kind of shampoo was it?

Keep us informed on what the vet says!!
