Question what causes panceritis(sp)???

i was at the vet for my cat and i over heard her saying to a dog owner to keep an eye out for pancreitis(sp) and not to feed human food. then a few days later i seen a friend that has some min pins and she told me that abby died from it. she went to the vet and got treated and was doing better and then her pancress(sp) burst. so what causes it and what are the signs?

Basically the same as in humans. It can be very painful if not treated. Some dogs more prone than others. It has to do with being insulin resistant. Fatty foods are definitely a no no. If a dog's pancreitis burst, which we have never seen , he must have had the condition for ages and wasn't treated. this would lead to peritonitis and of course the dog would die.

um pancreatitis causes the insulin resistance. Thats why the vet will say no ppl food. The sugars in foods are not broken down properly by the pancreas and cause horrible discomfort

I suffered from pancreatitus 18 years ago and that was down to my own doing by partying too much and keeping an inconsistent diet.
Believe me the pain is unbearable. On pethadine for 4 days in hospital. The doctors classify it as worse pain that childbirth in humans without pain relief. Only thing that cleared mine was giving up alchohol and keeping to a proper diet.

I am very insulin resistant, on the brink of diabetes, but my pancreas causes me no discomfort. As for ppl food causing it in dogs, I can vouch that the junk in dog food today is far worse. For example-gluten, everybody knows dogs cannot digest gluten, yet you can find it in dog foods.
Dog food companies put out a lot of misinformation that people fall for, but in reality, the dogs of yore were fed table s***** and lived a lot longer than our dogs today. Main reason I switched to raw.

Hi there Frankie.

My dog had pancreatitis, diagnosed by ultrasound. However, she showed no signs and we're not sure of the cause. Unfortunately, since she had no signs (and it was diagnosed right before the Addison's was diagnosed) we didn't treat it very much or for very long.

We put her on stomach protectants (sucralfate and famotidine) and a high fiber, low fat diet (hills w/d canned or eukanuba low residue canned) for a couple of weeks. She vomited blood a couple of times, but that could have been a sign of her Addison's as well??

Other dogs that have had pancreatitis in the hospital is usually secondary to something else.

My last pitbull died of pancreatic cancer. From looking at her behavior, you never would have guessed she was in so much pain. She was a one of a kind pit, I miss her soooo much!

My GS had pancreatitis a few years ago. I think she got into the neighbors garbage. Who knows what was in that. But she recovered with a bland diet for a few weeks. Symptoms were diarehea mostly.
