Ivomec

Hi! A lady came in the store the other day and bought some Ivomec, she was talking to anthoer gentleman about worming her dogs.
She was explaing the dosage, etc and mentioned that she also gave it to her pregnant dog.
Is this at all safe?
I wanted to say aomething, but didn't even know what to say!

I know some people do it, but it's not legalized by the FDA for use in dogs, and it's very easy to OD a dog on it if you do not know the exact weight and give the exact dosage.

I had to administer it to the owners dogs at the kennel I worked for. They were "show" dogs that lived day in and day out in cages or runs. They never got to touch the grass. But that's a whole different story.

Just to clarify, I'm referring to the liquid ivomec that is injectible and intended for cattle and swine.

And all I've read suggests that it should not be used on pregnant animals.

yeah i know its easy to OD them, and if they have heartworms it will kill them.
I have a foster here, heartworm positive, and she can't have that like the others do.

keep in mind many herding breeds like the collie have extreme reactions to using this product and that is what alot of people dont know or forget to mention.

is that the same as ivomectrin? i don't know about all dogs but according to the vet it's poisonous to collies

shadowfacedanes, i know according to instructions of ivomec it states do not use on preganant animals we use it on our minis cause a lot of the other wormers are a bit to strong or according to vet anyway lol

My poor collies! I've seen it time and time again, people, including vets, will recommend ivromectin to collie and sheltie owners! I have been able to talk to a few people who lost their dogs due to the incompetence!

A vet that lives near by told me she could get me Heartguard for cheap... no thanks. I will spend more money and not lose my dog thank you very much!

Ivermectin is what HeartGard is so it is legal.

Ivermectin in horse dosage can kill your dog unless you know exactly what dosage to give. My vet did recomend it for lice on my cats but it turned out to be fleas so we went with Revolution instead. I didn't feel confortable giving my horse wormer to my cats for fear of overdose.

I would only give Ivermectin ( Ivermec ) to a dog on the advice of a vet and only in the dosage recommended by said vet, not by anyone else.

My vet years ago was a large animal ve tand I trusted him totally. He taught me how to use Ivomec for heartworm prevention on my dogs. I use it still, but I do have the dogs tested regularly. And I never used it on my Aussies.
Again I agree only under a vets recommendation and care. This drug is poison.

ivomec is banned on the shelves here. You have to get it through your vet. And no, it isn't safe for pregnant dogs. As for Ivermectin, it is dangerous to shelties and collies.
