enlarged prostate gland
whisky the westie who some of you will have seen in photos with poppy is ill. he already has a heart and lung condition and has lived for longer than any of the vets thought he would. well he wasn't well last week, he wouldn't eat, started shaking and when he peed it appeared to be pure blood. so he saw the emergency vet.
they diagnosed an enlarged prostate gland and an infection so he had 3 injections, one of them for the prostate and he's on antibiotics. he still won't eat his normal food so i've advised hubby's auntie - his owner - to just let him eat whatever he will eat. she normally feeds him a homecooked diet with a few mixer biscuits but he would only eat cooked chicken so she was going to get some tinned dog food . i advised her to just give him cooked chicken and forget the rice and biscuits and the dog food and just give him whatever meat he would eat - she's worried he won't be getting all his nutrients but i said that cooked chicken would be way better than tinned supermarket dog food - i hope i told her right. so she needs to get a pee sample when he's finished the antibiotics to be tested and then he needs to go back to get his prostate checked out in another 5 weeks time, if it hasn't gone down apparently he will be on tablets for the rest of his life. i hope i'm wrong but from what i've been told i don't think he will be around for much longer, i think he's too old and has the other conditions that are taking their toll on him as well. hubby's auntie will be distraught when he has to leave us, i really don't know how she's going to cope but we'll do what we can for her. anyway what i really want to know is has anybody else got any experience with this?? |

Actually yes. This is why Shippo has to be neutered. He is 2 and had gotten a prostate infection. tahnkfully I caught it before it got to the point of blood in the urine but the was a couple of days that I had to watch very closely to make sure he was using the bathroom. He did not have to be on the antibiotic forever but your circumstance may be different He is doing great since we finished the antibiotic and is scheduled to get neutered on the 21st. The vet told me that it would help to prevent the problem in the future.

fehu - thanks for the info, i did some reading and found this great site
http://www.workingdogs.com/vcprostrate.htm apparently if he had been neutered as a puppy then this might not have happened but whisky wasn't hubby's auntie's dog from a puppy - he only became her responsibility a few years ago and he was too old to be neutered then. apparently blood in the urine could have lead to his whole body becoming infected... i'm glad to hear that shippo's doing fine - let us know how he gets on with his surgery. |

OK, well things aren't looking good for Whisky. His prostate has reduced in size but only a little and he still isn't eating... the vet thinks that his liver and kidney's are shutting down...
He is going back on Monday, I guess that may be decision day I wished I lived closer and could go with his auntie to the vets to give her some support...

Well it's not good news - they run some blood test and his kidney's weren't functioning correctly, he hasn't eaten since last week and he couldn't stand up or even wag his tail when she came home so the decision was made to have him PTS just over an hour ago... RIP Whisky...

Whisky would have been 15 years old in two weeks time... for the past few years we never thought he would make it to Christmas because of all his other health issues so we always left buying his presents to the last minute... he won't be seeing this christmas now... here he was last christmas, this is the last time I saw him...
![]() thanks for your kind comments, too, the whole family thought he was a good looking dog, he was what I called a "traditional" looking westie... |
