Update on Maia

Hi all-Well yesterday I too Maia to my own vet-actually it's a new woman who joined our vet and I wanted her to be seen, not have to wait till the next day. She was very nice and compassionate. I told her what had happened, and she was shocked. She examined Maia and found that she was running a fever and her incision was swollen. A lot of it can be because anthough I've kept her in her crate, she has still been pretty active. She chewed the collar off, and I tried the t-shirt idea, but she ripped that off, too. She has a long neck and seems to be able to get her mouth on anything. She's been good, though-I haven't seen her licking the incision or scratching (Yet). The Vet was surprised that they didn't keep her overnight, and didn't give her any pain meds. She gave me an antibiotic, a med for the inflamation, and a sedative (which doesn't seem to be doing much). She's not a very happy puppy right now . I take her back to the vet Thursday evening. It's ending up costing me twice as much to get her spayed. At lunch tomorrow, if I can get out, I'm going to talk to save-a-pet in person, not on the phone, to let them know whats going on. If the other vet treated us like this, they might have done it to others. One question I have-can the pups get hernias with the spaying surgery? Her incision, about 21/2 to 3" feels like a hard lump. My vet said it was the swelling, but today it seems to be a little more-maybe because she is trying her best to move around. I'll keep an eye on it and if need be, I'll take her to be seen on Wed. instead of Thurs. Boy, I didn't expect getting a pup spayed was such an ordeal. Again, thanks for all your support and information-I think I'd be going crazy without being able to vent to all of you.I'll keep you informed of what happens. Kathy and Maia

I'm glad you took Maia in to be seen. I wouldn't worry about the lump being a hernia....when the vet saw her today she would have been able to tell the difference between hernia and surgical swelling. When you have her rechecked in a day or two specifically ask the vet that question, but I'm sure it's swelling. Poor girl....that experience you both went through still makes me cringe and feel sick. I'm glad you're reporting it to the rescue group.
Mara and I send lots of get well wishes to Maia!!

Sorry about your girl, I think the swelling is a hematoma and that they can get worse with too much activity (I know try to keep a puppy quiet)

I think what you want to watch out for is excessive swelling and if it feels warmer than surrounding areas...and excesive licking.
Glad you got some meds for the poor pup, hope she feels better soon.

I should ask first if it is a hard knot I guess? If it is then its normal if not then I would definitely keep an eye on it.
(edited)
Hey Kshort don't worry about the knot too much its a regular part of the incision (sp?) If it starts seeming hot to the touch or oozing then worry. When there is any deep incision like that there will be a knot all my females have had it and I had it with my c-section. It'll go away in a few months. But I really am sorry it was such an ordeal for you and Maia. We have a great spay/neuter clinic here thank goodness.

Sorry that spay was such an ordeal, usually a very simple thing with no trouble. I have a feeling that place should be checked out. Probably not very sanitary. Glad you found a vet that was more on the ball. keep checking her temp, they might have to drain that lump, unless the antibiotics help it. First time I ever see this on a well done spay.

It would be extremely rare for a hernia to develop post-spay. Hematoma may be the cause. In any case, keep an eye on it and have it checked out if it doesn't reslove.

I feel so sorry! I know you were concerned up front and now just about all your worst fears came true.

I'm glad Maia's being seen by a good vet. And I'm sure this will pass.

This is a valuable lesson, though. Always take your pet to your own trusted vet. I had no idea it was part of a deal. I think I would have warned against it if I'd known. I wouldn't let any vet cut my pets but one.

Hope you and Maia continue to get better.

Like you said, this has really been a learning experience-never will I have any vet but mine touch my animals. Maia seems better-she's going crazy not being able to run and play, so I'm sure she is better. We go back to the vet tomorrow night, so hopefully she'll say things are healing well and we can get back to normal-thanks for all your knowledge and support! Kathy and Maia

Well, I just got back from our vet visit. She said that Maia is healing, but slowly. Even though I've kept her crated, she still has been a bit too active. The first sedative she gave her had no effect at all, so she wanted me to try another, just to try to have her relaxed so she can heal a little quicker. So we'll see what happens. We go back on Monday for her to be rechecked. Hopefully she'll be able to get back to her regular energetic self-she's going nuts not being able to run in the yard and house. Hugs to all! Kathy and Maia.
