Miko had to go to emergency last night

We were sitting watching tv and my husband got up to go into the kitchen and said, "What's all this blood all over?" I thought it was another paw pad incident, but after checking the three of them I couldn't find anything.

Then I saw Miko's bum and blood was dripping out. So, emergency vet trip. They couldn't find anything but a lot of mucus, so they said it's probably colitis, gave us amoxicillan and sent us home (oh, and charged us 100.00).

I told them he was straining to go poop and asked if the blood could be from that. They didn't think so since it was so much and it had a lot of mucus in the blood.

Anyone have any other ideas?

I've had Dax have a few drops on the outside of poo from a small fissure but nothing like you describe.
Sure seems like if it's not one end it's the other. . Kiss it better for me

Poor lil guy Sounds like what they said , the mucus goes with the Colitis. Hope it's just a 24 hr bout.

I was surprised that they gave me amoxicillan. Would you need an antibiotic for colitis? I don't know why I never think of these questions while I'm there.

He takes pro-biotics every day now which helps build up the good bacteria after the antibiotics kill the good stuff. i just really try to keep the anti-biotics to a minimum.

Well Debbie mind you I'm not the DR. IMO the cases I saw at the clinics with geriatric pets, it was a preventative measure because of the possibility of an infection.I'm assuming he is considered a low immunity case, so this would make their decision to give an antibiotic also.

I haven't seen any blood on the floors today. He does still seem to be straining to poop so I'm going to give him some pumpkin for extra fiber. Thanks for asking!
