Hi Im new here I have been looking for a site where I hoped I could talk to others about my adopted dog Stan. He is a Jack Russell crossed with a Corgi, (I will try to upload a pic of him soon). He is about 2 years old and was found wandering the streets.Ive only had him about a week, but he follows me everwhere, if I take him in the car he tries to get to me and sit on my knee, yesterday he managed to bite through his lead and landed on my lap. He is very nervous of men, but he will go to them eventually but he will just sit and let them stroke him, with women he is up on their knees and having the fuss of his life. The problems I have is that Im not sure how to train him, if my bf tells him to sit he does if I tell him he just comes running to me and wants fussing. If I leave the room or he feel anxious he runs around in large circles for ages until he is exhausted. Iam having him castrated on tuesday as I dont want him wandering off again and he keeps cocking his leg up in the kitchen to leave his mark. Any advice would be great

Many people can help you here when you start the training and having a specific question.

First off, if he was older than 6 months before castration unfortunately he would have matured already and the lifting of the leg is a learned habit and you will have to train him out of it...comes with the territory...male thing.
Your second prob. with him clinging, if you picked him up, he will cling to you, you are his security. Let him have that security. He needs it. Give him a chance to settle, after time he will get to know you and your partner and learn that all things are equal. Get your partner to do stuff with him that he feels a bond with, little treats etc. Your new arrival will soon accept you both on the same level. Training will be your ultimate goal, just post for specific things as already advised, we are only too happy to help. BTW WELCOME TO THE FORUM. Cheers Ellierat. |

How do I go about training him not to lift his leg. He usually does it when I am out of the room. I have a baby gate in the kitchen when I am out and it is tiled floors and walls. I always used a dissapointed tone and put him out and make sure I clean it up so there is no smell left.

Well, I'm not a Jack Russel fan myself, but it sounds like Stan needs some settling in. You won't be teaching him not to lift his leg, they learn it naturally, and you can't really do much about it. What you should be teaching is that your house is his home, and what is appropirate behavior and what is not.
This sounds like a job for Mr. Crate

Welcome. I'm looking forward to seeing pictures of Stan. I worked for a woman who had a corgi who came and stayed at the office with us all day. I loved that fellow. He was a gem and a gentleman. Occasionally we did recieve a memo from the boss that Gnutely had gained weight and to please not feed.
