Help

How do I go about training him not to lift his leg. He usually does it when I am out of the room. I have a baby gate in the kitchen when I am out and it is tiled floors and walls. I always used a dissapointed tone and put him out and make sure I clean it up so there is no smell left.

If he is over 6 months, unneutered, lost cause just about.
If he is under 6 months, get him fixed, but it may be a battle already now, once they lift the leg, sexual maturity has been reached.
If he was fixed before 6 months and still lifting his leg, let us know, we will see how we can help.

Kirby picked up leg lifting when he was a pup. Only dog, fixed before 6 mths, but still does it. Quite funny, because when it started, he had one leg about a cm off the ground, and over time, the gap got larger.

I don't think you can really go about teaching a dog to go differently. You just have to teach him that it's not appropriate to go in the house. Crating.

Chandra, is he nearly 6 months. If not, don't wait too much longer, if he is starting to copy now it is only a matter of a couple of days to a week or so and he will be a fully fledged leg lifter..
I always advise and like males to be fixed by 5 months if possible. Not worth waiting for sexual maturity to start. Once they leg lift it is almost impossible to get them to stop, and if they are dominant, they will do it inside.

Sue, he will be 6 months November 20th. We might have it done sooner.. the vet told us 6 mths but it doesn't really matter one way or the other to us. I'm not quite convinced of his birthdate, just watching him and seeing where he's at physically compared to where Harley was.. Can it be harmful to do it too early?

We held off on Harley thinking we might actually breed him. We decided to not and went ahead and had him fixed now, though. He seemed to do ok even though he was a little old and while he still lifts his leg, he doesn't show many of the more undesirable traits.

I really don't think there's any harm in getting them done early. Shelters fix their dogs as early as 8 wks.

Yep go ahead, I think the main reason to wait is to make sure that everything is in the right spot before they do it. without getting technical here..too early. lol.
Bump him up in time. He is so close to 6 months it is not gonna make any difference.
He may lift his leg though, unfortunately as u have a male that does it, he will copy him, just have to see how u go, you could correct him with it after fixing if you want to try. But it would only need to be done if it bothers you.
