collie ears

Hi all,

I have a 5 month old collie that I want to show. His breeders suggested I tape his ears down to make sure they tip. When I tried to take the tape off a few weeks ago, it would not come off easily but I stupidly kept tugging away at it and finally pulled the tape off the ear along with a lot of ear hair and skin. Needless to say, poor pup was not happy.

His ear leather turned bright red for a week or so and I kep cleaning it out with Novosolv (I think that's what it is) which is a wound cleaner from the vet. It did not help. Now his ear leather is bumpy/crusty and almost black looking. His ear is not warmer or colder than the other one but it seems to be very sensitive when I touch it. I've been putting a triple antibiotic cream on it but it is not helping.

I can't get him into the vet for a few days. Any suggestions on what this is and what I should do until he sees the vet?

Is this maybe an infection of the hair follicles? Will he need oral antibiotics? If so, I can take him to the emergency vet if I should not wait for my appointment.

Thanks!

Kit

Well, yes a Vet visit is in order. The Vet will be able to tell you the extent of damage and/or infection.I would go as soon as possible. The longer you wait, the more change of greater infection and possibly scarring. IMO.

I don't know for sure, but it sounds like that is going to scar, which might make showing a bit tougher. If the hair doesn't grow back, I don't know if he can show.

That shouldn't matter though. The dogs health comes first and I hope everything is okay. Would LOVE to see pics of your collie baby!
