poor lil carmen
I need any ideas if you know what is causing carmen to have seizures. Her first one was last year I think in september, then she didn't have another one till april then one in august, and another one last night, the one last night was the longest one yet about 8 minutes and she lost bladder control in this one. Her temp didn't spike though as in the previouse ones it would go up to 106. Also in the previouse ones her tongue turnes blue. She also does fly biting daliy and has facial trmors daily. She is 8 now and is a basset hound.

Start keeping a journal of everything that happens around the seizures. Time, play, exercise, food, etc. Everything you can think of. And yeah, see another vet. There are meds for these things.
So sorry...

I don't have any experience with things like that, but I'd also go to another vet. I hope Carmen is ok and that you can get it under control for her. Keep us updated!

I already have been to two vets and when I mention fly biting which is a medical term they look at me like I have 2 heads. 3 out of the 4 seizures she was sleeping when they happened.

What do you feed her??
I can only comment on the facial tremors. Clifford has focal seizures, seems smiliar to me. Anyway, I switched him to Eagle Pack, and it has kept them undercontrol. He was having about 2 a month, now I would have to say its about 1 every 3-4 months. Your situation is more severe, but food may be a starting place. Have you tried her on phenobarbitol? |

Is there a Veterinary University in Hawaii? If not , maybe you could surf the web for such and email one of the teaching directors and explain what is happening. They may be willing to send your Vet some info to help better diagnose. The Southern Illinois University has an excellant reputation for treating complicated cases, I'm sure there are more around the US. I don't know if they would be willing to do this, just a suggestion.

My darling chihuahua, Cleo, had seizures for the 1st 4-5 years of her life and one day, quite by accident, I came across some literature that said that yearly vaccinations can bring on seizures to susceptible dogs but I wasn't convinced so I kept researching this and the more I read about it the more I became convinced, then I spoke to a vaccine manufacturer who admitted that dogs do not need to be immunised yearly and that if they get their puppy shots and a booster 12 mths later they are protected for life (excluding rabies, but we don't have that here). I then read reports written by a well known vet (Dr. Richard Allport) who writes a column on a pet magazine and he also maintained and still does maintain that it is wrong to vaccinate yearly and that it causes auto-immune problems and seizures so I was convinced, I stopped vaccinating her and within 18 months the seizures stopped, it started with them slowly diminishing until they stopped altogether and I also like to add that Cleo had come into contact with the parvo virus and she was not affected in the least which also proved to me without a shudder of a doubt that what the vaccine company had told me was very true.
Here is a link that you will definitely find very helpful: http://k9joy.com/FinnSmed/introduction.html#i |
