Yorkie hates being groomed, help!!

Franklin is 6 months old. He is going through puppy kindergarden and doing very well with potty training. My only only woe is grooming him.

Every night I try to brush him, but all he does is turn around and nibble on my hands and the brush. Sometimes giving him a bone to chew while I'm brushing helps, but he usually ends up getting aggravated and tries to run away.

To make matters worse his coat is very soft and cottony; prone to mats. I've had to cut about five mats out of him in the past week.

I am really interested and dedicated to growing his coat, but going through this with him daily is making me quite frustrated.

Any advice?

When mine does that, I tap her on the nose & tell her no. It's not nearly enough to hurt her, but she doesn't like it. When she gets really bad and doesn't listen to me telling her no, I put her muzzle on her for a bit & she straightens right up.

It's all about desensitizing him. Do a little bit at a time, and give him treats and cuddles when he does what you want. Then gradually work your way up to more & more at a time.

Yes, try cuddling him, then just gently put the brush over him while petting him at the same time. Touch his toes, tail, ears, etc just while he is resting.
Go into the sticky on this forum, Grooming, there is a link called grooming tips etc. Have a read. It may help.
