Benadryl for puppies
I have a 11 week old toy poodle. He weighs 2.5 lbs. Next Wednesday we are flying and the total trip time will be about 8 hours. Our vet recomended we give him 1mg of childrens benadryl. Today we tried it out on him to make sure it would work. We put him in his carrier, since this will be the condition he will be in on the plane, and he is going crazy. He will not stop barking and when we take him out one hour after we give him the benadrly he is not showing any signs of drowsiness. Does anyone know anything about benadryl for puppies or any suggestion as to what we can do to make our flight a quiet one? Thank you.

Benadryl is an antihistamine, drowsiness is a side effect. You will not always experience every side effect of the side of a bottle, neither will your dog.

has your dog been crated before? if not, you may want to work on that so the dog is comfortable in the crate.
i have used benadryl for my dogs, and it's different for every dog as it is for every person. some dogs may get sleepy, others may not.

When my friend moved to Boston she was given a prescription sedative for her dogs. Unfortunately neither her nor I remember what it was called.
Both dogs seemed to have a very good trip (6 hours) and both were happy and calm on arrival.

My dogs usually have the opposite reaction to drowsiness with benadryl. I'm not sure what airline you are shipping with but you might ask what their rules are about giving any type of sedative.

I ship on American Airlines and this is what it says!
Sedation American Airlines will not accept dogs or cats that have been sedated or given any sort of tranquilizers
