Rawhide Poisoning
Hello,
Our healthy one year old lab died suddenly after injesting two rawhides. The necropsy and xray performed at our vet did not indicate asphyxiation or other assignable causes. We suspect acute intoxication from a chemical possibly in the rawhides. I took our dog to the Purdue University Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory for further investigation into the cause of death. If the physical examination and histology findings are negative, we will have toxicological tests performed on the dog, injested rawhides, and retained rawhide samples. The best case would be a finding of a more natural cause of death. If not, and Arsenic or other toxins are confirmed as the cause of death and linked to the rawhides, we will make prompt notifications to the FDA, seller, and Brazilian manufacturer. I have been searching for more specific information on other similar incidents and would appreciate any help. Thankyou Quote:

Every site I looked up for rawhide said "NO PRESERVATIVES" , if it is not on the packaging how can you be sure the poison wasn't introduced on purpose or other means?
Otherwise I would think there would be a lot more deaths reported as raw hides are very very popular |

I just checked the bag of rawhides from my local grocery store, they are made in Brazil and "preservatives" were listed. My dogs love rawhides, but, from now on I think I am going to be sure they come from the US or Canada..... and have no preservatives....

Interesting info
General Arsenic Poisoning Information Arsenic poisoning is a very serious condition that occurs when a person absorbs excessive amounts of arsenic, a very poisonous metal that deposits itself in the hair, nails and skin when ingested. Exposure to arsenic can result in damage to the lungs, skin, kidneys and liver and can lead to the development of certain types of cancer. Arsenic is a cumulative type of poison. The more a person ingests, the worse the condition. Possible Causes of Arsenic Poisoning Arsenic can be found in pesticides, laundry aids, tobacco smoke, smog, bone meal, dolomite, kelp, table salt, beer, seafood and drinking water. People who work in pesticide production, agricultural insecticide spraying, copper smelting, mining, sheep dipping and metallurgical industries are at an increased risk of developing cancer of the skin, scrotum, liver, lung and lymphatic system due to arsenic exposure. Possible Lifestyle Changes for Arsenic Poisoning Sulfur helps eliminate arsenic from the body, so eat foods high in sulfur, such as eggs, beans, legumes and garlic. Eat plenty of fiber every day. Have a hair analysis performed if arsenic poisoning is suspected Looks like if your dog is at risk so might you be depending on your water & environment. One of those things that make you say hmmm. |

When I first got my first dog, someone gave him a rawhide treat. It was one of the small squares as described here. He became deathly ill and was at the vets for several days. It was confirmed to be poisoning from chemicals in the rawhide. I don't know exactly what chemical that was, but my vet then and my current vet now both advise never feeding rawhide 'just in case'.

pig ears and snouts aren't rawhide, so no, you shouldn't have a problem with it.
Another down side to rawhide is that it can easily cause an impaction. I've seen it happen once and the dog ended up being put down. |

That is so scary We bought rawhides when we got jack. We have given her a few She LOVES them. I just read the back it said "not for human consumption"
It lists the ingredient:Rawhide, hydrolyzed vegetable protein, roast pork flavoring, caramel coloringm sodium benzoate(preservative) It doesn't sound bad but I think I'll throw them away. |
