Cranial cruciate :(

I can't believe this. The vet thinks Eddie, my 2-year-old, healthy-as-a-horse, 9 1/2 pound Yorkie, has a cranial cruciate injury. That's the main ligament that holds the knee together. It's usually only an issue in large dogs. Large, old dogs.
How it happened is what's strange. I was walking him on leash yesterday when a 20 pound Lab puppy came barrelling out of a yard unattended and slammed into him. Eddie has played with this Lab before and held his own. But he immediately came up lame on his back left leg.
X-rays showed nothing, but the vet suspects the cranial cruciate by his reaction to movement of the knee. He said he'd consider recommending surgery in a 20-pound-plus dog but said Eddie might be able to recover. The risk is further damage, arthritis, etc.
Ugh. So I don't know what to do. He's on anti-inflammatories, and vet thinks he'll be walking by Friday. If so, he wants to X-ray him again in 3 months. In the meantime, his budding agility career is over, at least until I figure out how bad it is.

I'm so bummed. One of the reasons I liked the idea of small dogs is that they're less prone to injuries like this.
Here's a picture of him recovering from drugs so you can all feel sad for him.

I'm very sorry. Hopefully it's not as bad as the vet thinks.

Big Hugs cyber sent.

Oh I am so sorry! I hope that it isn't as bad as it sounds or appears and it heals just fine. Big hug to Eddie from me and my furkids!

I am so sorry about your dog. BUT agility dogs pull their ACL(anterior cruciate) alot. I have seen them all come back to do agility. I found a ton of stuff on ACL on the internet as well as the cranial. Maybe there are some helpful healing tips. I hope he feels better soon

Thanks, I'm going to study up on it. I was hoping someone like yourself would have that answer. I had a hazy recollection of seeing the agility nationals and seeing a dog that was coming back from a similar surgery.

Oh, I feel so sad for him and you! I'm so sorry!

Cara is just recuperating from ACL surgery, so I know how much it hurts to see the little guy in pain.

Sweet little guy and tough, just give him lots of hugs and kisses and of course treats from us and we will all pray that he heals well without needing surgery.
