Any dog can get cancer - if you don;t spay her she might be at more risk for certain cancers than if you don;t spay her.

Your dog can get cancer whether you breed her or not. Certain cancers of the reproductive system can be completely stopped if the dog is spayed and male dogs if neutered.
Your vet is an excellent reference for this. They can give you all the benefits of altering your dog. Breeding is not an effective method of disease control in my opinion and puts a dog at greater risk than not breeding. |

The fact of the matter is that you can drastically cut down the risk of mammary cancer if you spay a bitch BEFORE her first season, after each consequetive season the risks supposedly increase. A bitch that is not bred runs the risk of developing pyometra as explained in the following link.

RC, that is suprising to me....what types of cancer are breeding dogs prone to? The only think that I am aware of is 'testicular cancer' in entire male dogs and 'mammary cancer' in entire females but aside from that I am not aware of other types of cancer affecting dogs that are used for breeding. |

Coming from France, spaying and neutering is not often done unless there is a real problem with behavior.
The one litter per bitch thing is an old folks' tell. It will not protect her, from cancer. Spaying and neutering doesn't either but at least,it stops having unplanned and unwanted litters. I would fix her before you have an unwanted litter. I fixed mine and do not regret it. By the way,I've has 12 dogs(6 females and 6 males) who were not fixed, none of them, ever developped cancer and none of them, ever had puppies. Last edited by golden&hovawart; 11-08-2006 at 11:58 AM. |
