bone cancer

Our 6 year old lab was just diagnosed with bone cancer. She has a small lump on her hind leg. The vet is sending the x-rays off to a specialist for a second opinion. He does not recommend the bone cancer test due to the pain involed. Has anyone been through this before? The vet told us that her life expectancy is 2weeks - 2 months. However, she does not even seem to be in any pain. She swims in the pool every day and goes for a walk in the morning. Maggie never is bothered with the lump, no licking, or limping.

Any help would be appriciated.

Have they talked to you about amputation?

My neighbor (and also client of the hospital) has a Great Dane with osteosarcoma. He was diagnosed back in February! Somehow, he's made it this far -- it's unbelievable. It's about the size of a golf ball now, and they couldn't amputate the leg because it's a front limb, and great danes don't do very well with from limb amputations. He's been on Piroxicam this whole time, and recently put on some pain meds as well since he does limp. But he seems to be happy!

You are in my thoughts over such a horrible diagnosis. I am not certain how they can say 100% it is in the bones if they have not done any type of invasive testing into the marrow. I would honestly suggest you visit an Oncologist for some testing. At least then you would truly know what you are faced with. Be strong!

We just lost our 6 year-old lab mix. She was hit by a car. 6 years old is just too young to lose a dog. I hope you can find some answers to save your Maggie!

I had a friend whose GSD was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in July. He was listed at a stage 4 at diagnosis and she did chose to have him euthanized. BUT.... when she took him to the vet he was 3 legged lame, his diagnosis came form a needle aspiration and an x-ray. She did have a bone biopsy done to rule out a bone infection and said she regrets it only for the comfort of the dog.

Amputation and/or chemotherapy was a some what successful option, she was told at earlier stages than what her dog was at. So if you have confidence in your vet and his diagnosis, I would follow his advice

God bless you and your pup-this is such a hard thing to go through. I lost my lab to cancer last May, but he did live longer than we expected. We'll send prayers to you and your pup that perhaps he'll be with you for some extra time. Hugs from Kathy and Maia
