Unhappy Peeing in crate

I have a 2 1/2 year old male (not fixed) boxer who has been peeing in his crate EVERY DAY for the past week. I am not sure if it is he's just mad, because he does do this when he is upset but not everyday (nothing has changed and he is getting the same amount of attention as always). I have called serveral vets (ours recently passed away) and they all say it could be either. The thing is, when i go to let him out, he cowers because he knows he has done wrong but then he does it again the next day....NEVER AT NIGHT or in the house so i am not sure if there is something wrong or if he is just upset about something. Please let me know what you think...THANKS!

hi there,
is he lifting his leg to pee or is he peeing and cowering at same time?

If he is lifting his leg to pee then he is doing it on purpose and it could be for many reasons from he has got to an age where he wants to scent his things but knows he is doing something wrong, or he is (mad as it seems) punishing you for maybe going out and leaving him or stopping him from doing something he likes!!!!!

If he is cowering and peeing then it is from fear and upset or maybe lack of control due to bladder infection or something!

i used to have a ***** who was a rescued pet and she peed in the kitchen and would not go outside for almost 2 years........she cowered everytime she did this but it was due to memories from her pased as she used to be shut out in shed and hit when she went to toilet in the shed...........

do you wash the bedding after he has peed in it? As this may be why he keeps doing it to re-scent!

Is there a new pet near to you or in your home that he may be smelling on your clothes and feels a need to let this other animal know that it is his space and territory?

just some sugestions.........hope it all helps!

I would sugest that you do not punish him or tell him off for peeing in doors but just call him out side as if you were just letting him out like any other time as he could build up a condition just from the upset and pee even more.......odd as it sounds!

blessed be

kizzy

I have a question about this... Is it when he is confined during the day, or does he just go in to pee and pop right back out again? If it's during confinement, I would first go to rule out anything medical. If he's lying in it, chances are, he doesn't know.

If the door is open and he goes in just to mess with it, I would clean it out with a good nutralizer (ie Nature's Miracle), try to catch him in the act, etc. If you have another animal, it might be venturing into his area, and he wants to keep it his. Keep others out.

First of all...Thanks for the quick responses! i guess i didn't explain what he is doing right...he is crated (locked in) during the day while i am at work. and when i get home to let him out he has already peed in his crate. with this said...it is really hard for me to catch him...i know he is not lifting his leg because he would pee right out of the crate. He is cowering when i walk up to the crate before i even let him out because he knows he is not supposed to do this...it took us 1 1/2 yrs. to crate train him...very stubborn boy we do not have any new animals just another boxer (female and fixed) who he has been with since we brought him home...she is two years older. and when i take him outside he is peeing like he has been holding it all day...I am just really confused and i don't want to punish him if it is medical but i am just really not sure.

First step is to get him checked over by a vet to rule out infection as a problem. If you find it isn't medical - a serious look around to see what has changed in his opinion (not yours) - new toys, guests, fighting between family members, etc.

i think it does sound like he does not want to be locked up in his crate and is peeing to punish you for it!

but do take him to vet to make sure..........always best if in doubt!

Glad to hear he ok and having treatment........i think i did cover most sittuations and said it could be infection, but it is possable that some dogs do punish humans at times by messing or peeing in home or bedding......i do not know if in the USA you have animal mind and wellbeing doctors....but here in UK we do and it is a matter of opinion....i did not meen to offend and yes crates are a safe secure place for a dog to be......i was not saying that they were not.........but it still is a fact that not all dogs will take well to a crate.

So who ever gave me my reputation report ...thank you!

That is what we thought it was at first...Norton will let you he upset by peeing in his bed or lifting his leg on the coffee table, YUCK! We call it malicious *****. I don't think we have those types of doctors but then again, i have never looked and I take no offense....I wish i didn't have to crate my dogs during the day but it is for their own safety...they are both HORRIBLE chewers and diggers if left along...I tried to gate them in the kitchen for a while and within 3 days they chewed through our bottom cabinets, ate a corner of one of the walls and dug a hole in the kitchen floor and ate the linolieum (sp?) He does not mind his crate...if you tell him to "go to bed" he races in and sits and waits for his biscuits and peanut butter "beehive" ball. I do appreciate your imput and if he didn't try to destroy everything while out of his crate and honestly hated it, i would absolutely consider an alternative area for him. Thanks Again
