Puppy Growth
Frankie has doubled in size yet again since I posted his pics last week ! I'm starting to worry now , I swear I can almost see him grow from day to day - now his paws are huge . Is this normal growth ?! Feeding him too much or somthing ?

It will slow down.. Ariel was the same way. Since she's turned 9 months old it has really slowed down. I think in the last month she might only have gained 3 - 5 lbs. There were months when her weight doubled from 20-40 lbs (first month home).
You can do the jiggle test to see if there's more fat than muscle. |

Kirby only gained 3 lbs from 2-3 months... oh, that WAS double his weight.
Nah, they're like kids, you get growth spurts. Like Dax says, check how much is fat.

Very little fat - with the exception of his belly after he eats , (typical round puppy belly) he's alll muscle !

Pups do a lot of growing within the first 6 months, more so than at any other time.
You will notice that he just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Check the bones on the front of the legs just above the paws, that will give you an indication of his ultimate size. That is how big his legs will eventually be. After 6 months it slows down and not such a dramatic increse is noticed as at now. |

Those bones are pretty big - I'm having a hard time imagineing , though , how big he will be . Ellie , is it normal for his back paws/legs to be thinner and a bit smaller than his front ? Or is that his breed ?

What happens is they grown at different rates in their bodies, so sometime the front can look higher than the back and vice versa. It takes till they are full grown for them to even out.
You may notice the legs lanky at times, the head looks bigger than the body etc. It is normal. He will even out, don't worry. Labs go through a yukky stage, sometimes they don't even look like labs at all. |
