health Issues when breeding
Ok im hoping to get a samoyed pup soon and my breeder is/has had the relevant breed tests done. So what do you have to have done in your breed? This is a question out of interest and i dont want it taken out of context.

I have cross breeds: toy poodle-bichon frise-shihtzu
We had to check for any STD's, thyroid, heart, trach, knees, elbows, hips, eyes, bite, Brucell, pateller palpitation, vaginal slide (smear). Those are just what I remember off the top of my head ![]() Ofcourse general health, weight, UTD on vaccines and free of parasites is a given too. Also I had to have all the health clearances from my breeder back 3-5 generations-per my vet. My vet also did general temperament testing with the aid of a vet tech who performed the tests prior with the HS. Then I can't think of whether there was a name for it, but since my one girl has a very shihtzu type face she did something to check her nasal/breathing abilities. |

Some people with breeds with short noses have the palate scraped . Rottweilers for me. |

I found this site that might be informative:
http://www.mirage-samoyeds.com/health.htm The OptiGen XL-PRA test is a DNA-based test that provides, for the first time, a method to unequivocally identify the X-Linked form of Progressive Retinal Atrophy (XL-PRA) in the Siberian Husky and the Samoyed. This will control the gene frequency in the breed so as to prevent producing puppies affected with the disease. |

Typically, Border Collies have hips and eyes tested.
I plan to test hips, eyes, thyroid, cardiac and possibly patellas. |
