Toe Nail Pulled Out
We are visiting friends who have an older lovely dog. Unfoturnately in playing with Daisy, Maddie caught her foot under a carpet and somehow it pulled out her nail. She bled profusely but seems to be OK now. We put a little polysporin on it this morning and she doesn't seem to be in pain. She is 14 years old so I guess she won't grow a new one. Should she be Ok - does she have to see a vet for that? As I say she seems fine and is running around OK. Of course we don't want her to suffer in anyway so just thought I would ask for your input.
Thanks and Merry Christmas everyone. |

Our Golden Ret. pulled is whole nail out. We did take him to the vet, the vet disinfected, antibiotic it and wrapped in for a week. He has never grown a nail in so he must have done a complete job of it! Oh well, one less toenail to clip.
Just watch it and make sure it is not getting pink around the nail opening. Obviously if that happens a vet trip would be advised. |

I've never had this happen, but I would imagine the keeping it clean is the most important factor. I would probably wash the area with antiseptic soap after walking around outside.

My Tigger a few years ago was playing outside and her toe nail was pulled off some how but she was fine and it grew back.

We went through this a few weeks ago. Our golden broke broke a nail. Unfortunatly we never noticed a problem with it until it started to bleed. We took her to the vet the same day. He sedated her and pulled the nail out. According to what the said, this was broken for awhile. I felt, and still do feel so guilty about not noticing it sooner. She seemed fine all along. We have clipped her nails without any problem for several months. She is doing well with the exception of some minor bleeding when she gets excited and jumps around.
Please don't wait to have your dog checked by a vet. They suffer without us ever knowing it. As our vet explained. Best of luck to Maddie & you. Have a wonderful holiday. |

Thanks everyone. Maddie is just fine. She is my daughter's dog and apparently they had noticed recently that the nail in question was at an odd angle. They were going to ask the vet about it on her next visit. When the dogs were playing (or roughhousing) I guess she caught the nail under the carpet and it came out. The major problem was the house is fully carpeted with WHITE carpet. It looked like there was a major crime scene. We iced her paw and kept the antibiotic ointment on it and put her paw in a plastic bag for her walks. It never bled after that and she is not in any discomfort at all. She is due for her visit to the vet so they will have him check it to be certain. My Daisy just wants to kiss it better all the time. In the meantime we are down on our hands and knees with spot remover. Thanks again. This forum is so great.

Update on Dusty. As I said, we took her today back to the vet because she was still bleeding from the nail removal. Our vet examined it, and said he wanted to take x-rays. The x-rays were abnormal. Our vet feels her toe isn't all that swollen, but seems like the oversize is caused by a melanoma. Which he explained to us is very common in dogs. (I never knew that) Dusty will have her toe removed tomorrow AM, and will have the removed part sent out to be screened for cancer. My heart is broke worrying about this angel. I am praying everything is normal & she will have a full recovery.

I am so sorry to hear about Dusty. I pray that all goes well for her. Be sure to keep us posted. I know the heartbreak of worrying about the poor thing. I know that if anything happened to Daisy I don't know what I would do. We are sending you all of our very best wishes and positive thoughts for a full recovery.

Thank you for your prayers for Dusty. We brought her home earlier this evening. The poor little thing is still groggy, but she is hungry. We will get the screening results back in about 2 weeks. Mark said the main thing is to keep the bandage dry so bacteria doesn't start to grow. Our yard is like a swamp, so we are going to let her out onto the porch to go pottie. She has never done this before, but we are hoping she will get the idea that it's okay to do her thing there. I did ask the vet about doing this, he said we may have a bit of a problem because she has never done that. My response was, well, eventually she will go, right? He laughed and said I had a good point.
Thank you again for your prayers & thoughts. Annie |
