Chubby Kimi
I guess I was in denial, too about Kimi's weight. My daughters all came home for Christmas and said she was fat, and I ignored them. But my friend who is a conformation judge walked in the door the other day and yelled "look at that fat dog".
![]() She suggested 1/2 a can of green beans, 1/4 C of kibble and a small spoon full of canned food a day. How does that sound to you all for her weight? She weighed 15 pounds last summer at the vet and he said her weight at that time was fine. We don't have a scale so I can't say what it is now. |

I think the easiest and best way for them to lose weight is to reduce the food by 10-20% and increase the amount of daily exercise by 10-20%.
Treats are easy to forget when you calculate how much a day they eat. |

I saw my breeder when Mara was heavy. Her and her handler advised me to not use Lite or Lower Calorie or Senior food because she was only 2.5 years old and wouldn't get proper protein/carbs ect....
I found a good quatily food with lower fat and I mix it with raw grated zucchini so that she feels full and I also have made a better effort to feed her twice a day instead of once. I've tried other veggies but the only one she likes with her food is zucchini. |

It soon good to me. Since Star has been on crate rest from her surgery I thought I best cut her food intake down so she wont get pudgy. My breeder told me to start adding green beans to her food so that she is still getting protein if I remember right.

They do make lite dog food for less active or older dogs. Also, veggies like carrots & celery make great treats for dogs too.
Good luck. |

Dax is so right less food, more daily exercise. We get so used to looking at our own, we do not realize the weight gain until somebody points it outright. Oh well, easier to get off than on most the time.

when gemma got chubby, i switched her dinner to steamed veggies, and changed her treats to green peas. thank god gemma loves veggies. that means i had cut her puppy food by half. is that ok? she is nine months now.
after the change, she lost a bit of weight, not too much. still some way to go before i consider her weight ideal. it's hard to increase her exercise; she's already getting an hour's walk daily, and i only have time for that. i think it's easier for my dog to lose weight than it is for me. i can never survive on a salad dinner.

Unfortunatly Kiimi is a picky eater-she won't eat raw or cooked veggies by themselves. She looked at me like I was crazy when I put green beans in her bowl. I'm going to try more exercise and less food. She really doesn't beg for food and often doesn't eat all of it in her bowl. I'm going to watch the training treats too.
Thanks for all your ideas. |
