Loss of puppies

My ex called me yesterday in a panic about a puppy-one of 6-that was fading. I went and picked the 2 day old up. When I first saw her I thought "no way is she going to make it". She was limp, cold, had no motion and severly dehydrated. I was able to get her to suck -just barely- from a bottle. I did this several times and she began to perk up. I have now been doing this for over 24 hours and now she seems to be a normal 3 day old puppy. I introduced my momma dog (her's are now 7 weeks) to her and she immediatly cleaned her and laid down to nurse her. All and all this puppy appears to be doing well. In the meantime, my ex has called me 2 more times. Both times to retrieve a fading puppy. Both passed before I could make it over. This leads me to my question-Does anyone know what could be the cause of this. Momma dog is very healthy (doesn't even look like she has given birth aside from her teats) and milk appears and smells normal. All puppies at birth appeared normal and from the information he relayed to me, the puppies all seemed strong, then he would find one cold and limp away from momma. He now has two of the six puppies still on his dam and I have one of them here with me. I am limited on alot of information as I do not live there or go there often. I just have never heard of this many puppies fading out of one litter-especially a relativley small one like this.

Oh-she had a litter of 6-now down to 3-but would have been 2 had I not retrieved this one-since he doesn't know what the you know what he is doing.

Thought of something to add-the mother continues to lick them off of a nipple-he has told me that when he checks on them the puppies are scattered all over the place away from her. She does continue to lay-so I am not sure if she is doing this to get them away or not. She has been over bred as he has bred her on every heat. This is another reason we are no longer together. His breeding ethics greatly disturb me. The poor thing needs to be spayed. I am hoping that this will convience him, though it is a very sad way to learn. I have the one who is still alive and seems to be doing good-he will not be getting her back.

I'm no expert.. Matter of fact not even a breeder. But it sounds like she might be refusing to feed them if shes licking them off her teat and moving away.

I can't offer any advise, but I sure hope the remaining pups and the Mom did alright.

She is a boxer and I believe that this may be her 4th or maybe even 5th litter. I believe 4 should be the MAX number of litters in the life span of the female. That may be even too many. Yaya won't be bred until after 2 years of age. She won't be bred again until 1 year and a half after that then she will more than likely be spayed. The puppy I am bottle feeding and sharing with my female seems to still be doing well. She is not as active as I would like to see her, but she is urinating as well as the other normally. Wish us luck-I have never had to hand rear one this young before.
