Post-Christmas Blues at the Shelters

Oh yes, it's getting that time of year already. Unbelievable, isn't it? And whose fault is it, really? Backyard breeders, pet shops, you guessed it.

That's right, it's starting, the post Christmas rush. Yep, yep, people are finding that the puppies that they bought or recieved as pets for Christmas at 5-7 weeks old were not quite as easy to housebreak as they thought. People are realizing that a kitten/cat does require some work! Oh my goodness, I didn't know I was allergic to cats, and I didn't know that this puppy would tear up so much property, didn't know it would be so expensive! This is an especially bad time for terrier breeds that have the cute little face in the glass window, but when they get home...

This will go on for the next several weeks. The next rush? Give it 4-6 months, that's when the German Shepherd and Labrador puppies aren't so little and goofy anymore.

With the shelters slowly filling up again (they were literally near empty around November,) we are already full to the max with cats again- a step up from the 4 we cared for November through to January. And a young dog already, I can totally imagine that we'll be sent another as soon as Fonz (if) finds a forever home.

That's very sad Moo. It's a year ago right about now that someone found a Maltese (i think) puppy locked in his crate on the side of a dead end road a few miles from here......

I cant stand people who buy on impulse and then dump the animals. These poor animals deserve better. We cant do this to children when they outgrow the "cute" stage. Why should they be aloud to do the same with animals.

Moo that is so true about the larger dogs. I noticed also that for labs and goldens the time period from about 14 months to two years is a bad time, too. Many unaltered, unsupervised dogs will stray during this time and tied or kenneled dogs of this age seem to really be into chewing things up.

Puppies are puppies, whatever the breed. Both my dogs, digged and shredding papers, shoes.I know I was pretty lucky. They can destroy up to the age of 2.what do people expect?.A puppy is not an object and it is so sad to see all those pretty faces looking up at you without knowing what they did wrong,They didn't ask to come to be alive, let alone being baught and then rejected because of too much work. The dobie is gorgeous but what happened to his face.It looked scratched.
Moo and all the others who rescued or helped animals,thank-you.Titus&Priska

Actually a german shepard that is out of the puppy stage is what I am looking for. I looked into the rescues and they don't want them to be farm dogs. They want them to be inside and there are so many standards that arent' practicle. I have been keeping an eye out at my local shelters but shepards are hard to come by around here. They are very expensive if you buy from a breeder. I put up a thread if someone has one I could adopt/rescue for my dad.
