Hot Spot? Mange? HELP!
Would anyone know what the red bald spot in Boozer's left leg is? Hes had it for more than a month now. Its only in that area that he's had these spots, the rest of his body looks very healthy and shiny. Could it possibly be an onset of demodectic mange or hotspots? He doesnt scratch or bite on them. It just came out. Thanks!

Mange normally hits the head or face first cause it is their sticky noses that get them into trouble with that stuff, or their feet. It starts as an itchy rash, then turns to peeling crusty skin and scabs. The scabs in turn then get infected, causing a yellow sore, but it spreads quickly, to cover the entire body if not treated.
Demodectic? That is from your area? I have heard of sarcoptic, which is also known as fox mange. Hot spot (wet eczema), is as it says a moist, wet, smelly spot of skin. Your pics look neither of that to me. Is it itchy? Does he bite at it? If you say it has been there for a month, I would not say it is either of the above, you may need to ask your vet next time you go. I am not a vet, and neither is anyone else on the forum, sorry. We really are unable to help with this kind of thing with a 100% certainty. |

Demodectic mange is totally different from sarcoptic and is not contagious to other animals. This is caused by microscopic mites which live in hair folicules Most dogs have demodex mites, passed from their mother when nursing but with no problems. How old is Boozer? DM usually is a puppy problem but my Basil (4) had it this summer much to my and his vet's surprise. They can have a localized version, like on a foot. Basil had generalized, more severe. There is a lot of hair loss with it and your dog doesn't have that thank goodness. Basil had to go every week to the vet's for dips and still has not recovered his beautiful hair although it is growing.
I would take your pug in to the vet for a skin scrape. |

Could it possibly be hives? or some other type of allergic reaction? Perhaps you washed his bedding in a different type of detergent or he's been to a new park lately?
You say he's had it about a month... does it come and go or is it constantly there? Does it change size or shape? Also, could it be a bruise? was he playing rough with other dogs or perhaps ran into soemthig (mine bump into walls and doors A LOT!) LOL.... |

Thanks so much for all your help!
Weimlover, no its not a brusie or anything like that. That big bald spot just came out one day and has since been that size til present. If you notice, he also has a few smaller bald spot near it but arent as red as that large one. I will bring him over to the vets this week...I just dont want to subject him to dips of any kind...I find those things so toxic! Oh well...thanks once again! |
