So sad...

My boyfriend works with a guy who is currently going through a divorce. He has 2 kids and had 3 dogs but supposedly the dogs were too much for him to care for. I can understand that 2 kids and 3 dogs would be a handful for anyone, especially a working single parent. This guy had 2 beautiful Great Danes and a cute chocolate Lab. He was trying to find homes for the female Dane and the Lab. Well, my boyfriend told me that his friend had found good homes for the two dogs and I left it at that, even though I didn't understand how having to care for three dogs was really that much different than caring for one (especially since his main concern was that it was a pain to have to come home and let them out to the bathroom when visiting relatives or when they're gone for the day). And I figured that whoever they went to would care about them more than their previous owner did. Today I was checking my local humane societies web page and to my complete surprise I see Belle and Hooch up for adoption. I was so sad for them. And I was curious as to why this guy, who is good friends with my boyfriend, told him that he had found them good homes when in fact he just dumped them at the humane society!!! Talk about taking the easy way out! I would love to take either or both of these dogs but I live in a small apartment with a dog and two ferrets. Please, if anyone in Wisconsin is looking for a dog, please consider adopting Belle or Hooch. They are awesome dogs and I don't know how their owner could do this to them. Check them out here.

Hooch

Edited to add my boyfriend asked him about why he lied to him about taking them to the humane society and he said he "didn't want to talk about it" and he also said that they won't put them to sleep because they are purebreds. That makes me feel a little better for them but it still doesn't change the fact that the guy is a bad owner! And now it makes me mad at my local humane society because even if the purebred dogs don't get PTS because they are put into breed rescues, what does that mean for the unadopted mixed breeds? GRRRR What is wrong with people!

Thats so sad. I hate it when that happens. I so hope for Hooch and Belles sake that they find great homes.

I hate to burst your bubble but in all my years of dog rescue work, thousands of purbreds are put to sleep for homlessness every year. Breed rescues have to triage who they can take in as well as any other rescue there are just too many needing help versus space and resources. Your best bet for these guys is to contact the breed rescues and try to find a space for them yourself.

I agree that being purebred isn't going to save them from being put to sleep. Especially labs when there are so many and all the breed rescues are full but I did crosspost it on a lab forum so maybe someone will be able to pull through and help.

That is so sad. I just don't understand how anyone could do that.

I feel so bad for them.

they dont look like very good standards of there breed for being purebreds. But hopefully someone will take them in, because quality doesnt matter.

I was wondering what about contacting a Great dane and lab rescue groups in Wisc.? I know I usually get ahold of my Vizlsa rescue group when I find one in a shelter. They are able to get them out and foster them until they find a sutiable home for them. This way they have a chance at a life.

I emailed Fox Valley Great Dane Club and Rescue about Belle and WI Lab Rescue (which is also based out of the Fox Valley area) about Hooch. I hope to hear back from them soon. If they can't take them in and find foster homes for them, I'm thinking they can at least spread the word about them. The dogs have been at the shelter since Saturday. I can just imagine how scared and confused they are. I will keep you updated.

I hate to say it, it is very judgemental, but there is something basically wrong with a persons character that gives them the ability to do this. What a coward. Sorry this sounds so severe, but I am tired of people treating animals and children as disposable items.

I'm not defending this guy's dumping these dogs at the pound,....but-when my first husband and I got divorced, I was living in a single wide trailer, worked 9-12 hours a day, had an 11-month old daughter and a 1-year-old bullmastiff. All day long good old Lou would stay inside-not chew, not pee. When I came home after supervising 60 employees in 12 different convenience stores and picking up my daughter from day care. There he was with his huge tail wagging, and I was so tired and so stressed I would get aggravated with him. Then picture a 100 pound puppy literally dragging me and my daughter in the stroller. Did I need help? Yes, did he need more training? Yes. I know better now, 19 years later. I didn't, however dump him at the pound, I made my ex find a place to live where he could keep him. I just felt that it wasn't fair to have him waiting for me all day and then my own immaturity caused me to get annoyed with him. Again, I don't think the pound was the best solution and to lie about it is even worse, but I can also understand how sometimes it's not fair to the dog(s) for them to not be cared for and loved properly at home.
