Need expert advice with possible adoption

Since my Beagle died a few months ago, we wanted to find a companion for our 9 year old male Rott/mix - his name is Mel. Since we found Mel 8 years ago, he has always shared his life with Ali the Beagle. (Ali ws the boss ) We would like to find a companion for Mel, however, we tried bringing in a very sweet 2 year old male rott..who he hated, would not let him near him. They did not have good chemistry I suppose, the other dog was deaf, but never once showed any aggression toward him. We introduced him to a 2 year old female rott...could not be bothered, he turned his face from her and eventually left the room

Do you think it is possible it is too soon to bring another dog into his life or do you think perhaps he wants to be alone at his age?

I always felt that dogs lived a longer more fulfilled life with a companion, do you find this to be true?

Here is a photo of Mel (short for Mello, he is usually a very sweet very mello guy who loves everyone)

Well, I can't really give expert advise, but ...

He might just need more time to get used to another dog. If he's not used to be around other dogs besides Ali, he might not really know how to act around them. Maybe he would prefer a smaller dog, more the size your beagle was. If want another dog, I would keep trying and give a little more time for them to get used to each other.

I think you need to move on from ali before he will except a new dog. If you arent ready and still grieve her then he wont. He can move on but he is stuck with you cause you are his owner. You also may just have to find the right dog for him. Did you ever think of trying another beagle cause he may just not want another big dog he wants the little on back.

Yep, was thinking he would probably prefer a Beagle. He heads right for every Beagle he sees at the Dog park or on our walks. (scares the owners half to death! ) I dropped off donations today at the Humane Society and saw a big rolly polly Beagle that looked just like Ali...I may go back to see him again
