Coughing, any suggestions/advice?

My pup, turning one in March, has just started coughing. I noticed it yesterday when I came home. I thought he had something stuck in his throat as that's what it sounded like. It only happens when he gets excited. Sounds like he's trying to get something out of his throat. If it doesn't clear up by Monday I am taking him to the vet, but I just thought I'd see what you thought. He has had his Bordatella vaccination so I don't think it could be kennel cough, plus he hasn't been around any dogs in the past week or so. Anyone know if I can give him anything to help with the cough? Thank you in advance for any and all replies!!!

Also wanted to add it's been really cold here, I hope it's nothing like pneumonia!

Even being vaccinated your pup can get something like kennel cough.

Or it could just be a lack of moisture in the house. When it gets cold here, it also gets dry.

Does he sound like a duck honking? Any discharge from his nose?

Ariel has had kennel cough, she's also had an upper respiratory infection. She coughed in both cases but with the kennel cough the 'honking' type was very distinctive.

Hmm, we've been learning about some serious causes of coughing so I won't go into the first things that popped into my mind! lol. (Don't worry, the things I thought of are very unlikely.)

What breed of dog? Could he have eaten something that maybe scratched or irritated his throat?

Actually, just the other day my roommates dog was coughing usually when she jumped up from laying down. Kind of the same thing, looked liked she was trying to get something out of her throat but there was nothing there. By the middle of the next day she was over it.

Well he doesn't sound like a duck, and there's no discharge.

He is an Australian Shepherd.

I gave him a bone stuffed with peanut butter and treats before I left (I do this almost every day) and when I came back, about 3 hours later I noticed the cough. Seemed like a rather sudden onset, so I originally thought he got a treat stuck in his throat, but it hasn't stopped.

Thank you very much, both of you for the quick replies.

My lab a few months back was coughing and it sounded like he was choking on something or trying to get something out of his throat. It got worse with more excitement. When I took him to the vet he had said that there was a virus going around causing this trachael irritation. He gave me some meds and doggie was better in a day or two.

That sounds just like my pup agility! It seems a little better today but I still plan on taking him to the vet Monday if it's not 100% better by then.

Thanks for the concern Emmagirl, I will keep you posted :-)
