Two things it MIGHT be are reverse sneezing or tracheal collapse, the latter being potentially more serious. We just had a thread that included info on both, so if you use the search function on each, you should get some good info.

Do you have some pics of your Pom? I have a white Pom named Cali - see my avatar.

my pom does it too. i've been told it's called inverted breathing.and that it's nothing to worry about. i can't explain why they do it cause i've only asked other people who have asked their vet. you should call your vet and ask why they do ita nd if that is what your pom is doing(inverted breathing) i work w/dogs and i have seen countless ones that do this and all their owners called it inverted breathing.i think it is very common in small and toy breeds.

I think inverted breathing is another name for reversed sneezing. However, because tracheal collapse is also very prevalent in toys breeds (I have a Toy Poodle who has it), I would definately let your vet take a look.

Thank you for your replies. SOmeone told me to rub his neck when this happens. Does anyone do that? I would love to send a picture but I'm new to the site and having trouble with the size. He is so beautiful. He is a multi Black, white, and fawn. He has a really thick coat and a perfect profile

I've gently rubbed the throat. I also try and get them to lick me, anything that will make them breath through their mouths seems to stop it.

Home remedies aside, and not that they wouldn't work, but do you plan to get a vet's advice on this?

I was told this is what my pup does (she is a small 6lb Shih-Tzu)...but I am really not 100% sure what it is. Can anyone fill me in????

It is darn scary when she does this, I think she is choking and puck her up and pat her on the back till she stops. Is there anyway to ensure it does not happen. Like I said is scares the dickens out of me!

For sure get your vet's advice but it does sound like a reverse sneeze. Is it something new you said he is 3 did it just start?
