Gum coloration.

What is the healthy coloration the gums should have? Right now Unique, my six year old pitbull, has white coloration above her front teeth and it goes to pink as it extends to the back of her mouth. Any help would be appreciated.

It should be pink, unless it's a chow or a sharpei.
If it's white,I would check his temperature and ask yr vet,to check for lyme disease or something else.

Actually, Kirby's gums, and the roof of his mouth are dominantly black, and he is far from a chow. He is just a highly pigmented breed.

A lot of dogs have coloured gums, and it is commong for some (like labradors) to have black spots on their tongues. Shar peis and chows have the blue tinge all over.

My golden has a black spot as well but I've never heard of white gums, always hear of pink or dark pigmentation.

Blaze has some black coloured gums. I wouldnt be worried about that colour.

But what G&H said i would check tempeture and call a vet to see what they think. Better to ask questions then be sorry int he long run.

If the gums are normally pink and are suddenly white it could be a sign of anaemia. Only a blood test can diagnose that for sure.

please get your dog to the vet, i had to check poppy's gums every day when she had problems with her platelet counts and blood clotting. if her gums were white then i had to get her to the vet straight away. i'm not saying your dog has this but like mara said it could be something to do with the blood.

please let us know what happens.

Thank you for everyone`s advice. Nique`s gum coloration is back to normal and I`m still checking them everyday to make sure she keeps to that color. She has a scheduled vet appointment coming up and I will make sure to mention it.
