Red face Berner and Cow Hocked back legs

I have a 14month old Berner who is getting an operation on Monday 2/12. Our Orthopedic surgeon has not seen this in a dog in over 12 years. The problem is, his back legs and knees are completely straight. However, right at his ankles his paws turn out to the sides. Has anyone every encountered this or heard about this in any other dog. And, mostly was the surgery a success. We love this dog so much and want to find out as much as we possibly can. Here is his picture -

My mom's blond hovawart has the same problem.Although it is a defect for a show dog ,he didn't need any operation. Her hips were OFA x-ray good.I would check with another vet or 2 to make sure, you really need it.If he is in any pain or is limping ,than, you might have to consider it but I would have her back legs x-rayed,first so as not to put her through pain.If he is a show dog,I would neuter him so as not to pass it,on.My Mom's Hova is leading a perfectly healthy life,it's just not a nice gait.
By the way,he's gorgeous.Also.I forgot to mention that too much weight or exercice can make the problem worst.
What could to improve the problem,is to make him swim,a lot but I know it's difficult,in winter.

Thanks for the response. Actually we have had him at several vets and specialists. He has problems in the house getting up and sitting down. He uses all his muscles in his front legs and shoulders to get up. He is not a show dog, but we can't bear to see him suffering like this. Our surgeon said arthritis would settle in sooner than later with his situation. We will try one leg first and see what happens. He's too young to act so old.

Your dogs are gorgeous as well

Then go for it.
He 's a young dog, that has many yrs of good life,in front of him and if the vet told you,to do it,do it.Just keep him lean cos weight can make a lot more damage,on it.

He is 107lbs and we watch what we feed him. He has a super sensitive stomach. I will keep you posted how the surgery goes - we researched and did find we have the best Orthopedic Surgeon in NE Ohio. Fingers Crossed

Even though I'm on the west side of Cleveland, I know my vet has physical therapy after surgery such as this. Here is my vet's website if you'd like to have a look: http://westparkanimalhospital.vetsuite.com/

Here is a picture of the underwater treatment taken from the website:
