Poodle Breath
Lena is a happy healthy Cockapoo.
She just turned 3 years old. I bathe her fairly often so she smells good, but the past few months I've noticed that her breathe is bad. I have never had her teeth brushed. Do I have to take her to the vet and have her put under to scrape off plaque? Or is there something I can buy, so I can brush her teeth myself? She will let me mess around in her mouth, as long as there is no noise involved, like a motor. Is bad breath a poodle thing? |

You can brush them yourself with doggie toothpaste. Here is also an enzeme spray that you can buy to spray on teeth. (I have never tried it).
My old girl lets me take a dental s******* to her teeth without issue. It depends a lot on how much your dog will allow you to do in their mouths. |

Bad breath is normally poor hygene and dental problems . I would take her to the vet.

I have two Poodles and they are notorious for building up plaque and tarter on their teeth, as are all small breeds. It definitely negatively affects breath. If there is already alot of tarter and plaque buildup, then you probably need to have their teeth professionally cleaned (it will be too late to get it off via regular brushing).
February is National Dog Dental month so many vets offer discounts in Feb. Once the teeth are cleaned, consider brushing them several times a week with a pet toothbrush and pet toothpaste (not human!). To begin with you can use gauze on your finger or a finger brush. If you do nothing, there will ultimately be tooth loss, possible abscess teeth and, worse yet, negative bacteria that can get into the dog's bloodstream and cause things like heart problems. |

Small breed "companion" dogs are often the victims of bad teeth thus bad breath. Starts off as puppies as most need to have some teeth removed due to being impacted & many don't get this done. Then they're so little, many owners give them soft food as well as their own people food. This adds to the dental woes. I check the teeth of my dogs and cats all the time. Last time the cat was done it was $60. Vet told me this month the dogs are fine and don't need any treatments so I don't know what the going rate is. They knock them out so that's most of the bill I was told. A check up to find out is usually pretty inexpensive though. Then you won't have to wonder.

I have two poodles and my oldest does have bad breath. Well he used to. I had a thorough look at his mouth and found some dodgy looking teeth which were removed. I also brush his teeth with doggy paste that I purchased from the Vet. My other pup's breath is perfect thank god lol.
Have a look at his mouth and see if you can find any tartar or brown teeth or failing that any wobbly teeth. Brush his teeth for a week and if you don't notice any change in the smell then get the vet to do a dental check on him. Luckily I've never had my dogs teeth s******* but good luck |
