humping...

ok... i know humping is of dominance, but i think my dog is really sexuallly frustrated... can that really be a thing? im begining to wonder.

How old is your dog? Is he around in heat females? If not, then I doubt it's frustration. Unless you're planning on breeding him, why not get him fixed and solve the problem.

Well, he's about a year old.
He's not around females in heat. He's an Australian Shepherd Dog. He's doing this to a Pit Bull that we have taken in. I see know that 'mounting' is a dominant behavior, but it's kinda not just mounting. Do dogs have internal clocks like humans...? haha... We've though about breeding him, but can't find a chick for him. ...yet... maybe he wants to mate...? That's what im wondering. Can dogs want to mate? [img]tongue.gif[/img]

I think its' more of a drive vs desire. It can be for dominance and just lust. If you are going to breed him, then it will be a matter of training. You could put a leash on him and when he starts pull him forcefully and quickly off the other animal using a command like "OFF"

No matter what- you will have to teach him manners as no body likes a humping dog on their other pets, knees, stuff animals etc.

It's a misconception that a male dog wants to have a family. He's pretty much a hound dog - gettin it on with whatever is handy. In the wild, only the top male & female wolves in the pack mate. THAT should be you in your little pack

I hope this doesn't start another 60 posts - but you may want to consider if there is anything worthy of reproduction (ie. best of breed, pedigree, obidencnce, etc) I

To really know for sure if its a dominance or frustration issue you have to examine a couple of things carefully.

Does he look at the pit bull with a twinkle in his eye? Is the Pit Bull cute? Does he smoke a cigarette than roll over afterward?

It can also be possible that the Pit bull may have been overly suggestive towards him, so it might not be his fault at all.

Cara, as you must know (from taking in someone else's unwanted dog-the pitt bull) there are so many dogs in shelters, etc. many of them are pure breds. PLEASE, if he is not a champion himself (even if it is in his pedigree) get him neutered. I think this would also calm some of his sexual drive and both he and the pitt bull would be a little happier

I don't think dogs are as sexually complex as humans. They don't really think in terms of "I must get some". Maybe you should get him neutered. It's not necessaary to breed him because you thikn he's sexually frustrated. That puts the female at risk and adds to shelter problems (I don't meant to lecture). Get him neutered and if that doesn't help, it's dominance.

This whole humping issue reminds me of the time when I was over at my uncle's house, and he has this huge male black lab, and one of my cousins (not his kid), has this little miniature pinscher male. And then one of my male cousins (still a different family), accidentally fell on the floor, and this lab just came over and started full body humping him, and the min pin ran over and started humping his head. I hate this guy, soit was GREAT to watch. We had to pull the dogs off him. Also, both of this dogs were neutered.

But yeah, not getting into the whole breeding discussion...and not really offering advice, but one moment of dogs humping makes for one of my most valued memories
