As some of you may know from my previous thread, i have a shih tzu, as some of you advised it, i took her to the vet...
to find out that she has bilateral inguinal hernia... the vet said i could put her through surgery, or contact the breeder and maybe return her... i'd rather not turn her in as ive become attached to her, but will have to do so if the operation is dangerous or too expensive.. does anybody have any advice to wat i should do? and give me a rough idea to how much this operatin will cause? |

Contact the breeder. If they have any health guaruntee on the litter they should be responsible for the cost of the surgery. If there was no health guaruntee, ask if they will pay for half. The pup had the hernia (most likely) when you paid for her and picked her up so they should help you with getting her healthy, if you bought her from a reputable breeder.

Glad the breeder is paying, hernias in pups normally occurs because when the mum was cleaning up the bag etc. sometimes they bite back too far and take the cord right off, hence the stomach has a hole. It is not a dangerous operation in young dogs, I would have it done now before it gets any bigger, then you would have serious problems. The only time it would possibly affect your dog later is if you wanted to breed, it could split again with the pressure of pups.

Tell the vet before the op that you intend to have her spayed, they could probably do both at once, save your dog from 2 anaesethics, just ask them to detail the invoice for cost differences.

No, but you may be able to wait for the hernia op till she is old enough, which would be in about 3 months. up to you, check with your vet, see what they think.
