Smelly Puppy!!

3 weeks ago when we took the puppies in for their 2nd set of shots I noticed that morning that Pippy had a fishy smell to her, so I had the vet check her over and he said it was vaginitis and put her on an antibiotic for 7 days and with in 2 days the smell was gone. She finished her antibiotic 2 weeks ago friday. My moms puppy Socks got the same fishy smell and she took her to a different vet who said he didn't like to put puppies that young on antibiotics and to just wash her with warm water and mild soap. Dry her well and then put cornstarch on.
Well any ways Pippy's smell has come back and I have been doing the washing thing with the cornstarch and the smell just keeps coming back. It is not working for her. Should I keep washing her with the soap and water as she has to go back next week for her 3rd set of shots or should I take her back to the vet now for more antibiotics? Is this common in dachshund puppies or should I insist they look deeper into it to find out why this keeps happening? And if anyone else has experienced this I would love to hear your advice and comments.
Thank you, Lynn and Pippy
P.S. she turned 3 months old on monday, and she is acting herself..

I am curious how Socks is doing? Did the washing and cornstarch work for him/her?

When Bianca and (our) Pippy get that fishy smell, it is usually their **** glands. I think it is a little worse if you give them any fish or there is fish in their food.

I never even thought of that since she had been to the vet but maybe this is the glands

Has she started loosing her puppy teeth yet? I remember when Lilly was teething she had a bit of bad breath. Or isnt the smell coming from her mouth? It could also be her **** glands, did the vet clean them out? has she been itchy or anything?

No it is deffinately not her breath, She hasn't been scratching down there but licking and Peanut and Ginger try to lick her there to and I stop them that is why the vet said infection. Unless she starts acting different I am just going to keep cleaning her until she goes to the vet next week, I will ask them about her **** glands. If it is her glands does that mean they are going to have to be tended to all the time or will it sort it self out as she gets older? Thank you, Lynn and Pippy

If it is the **** glands that are impacted then more than likely one visit will do the trick. Unfortunately there is a good chance that Pippy will have to take more antibiotics. But normally if a dog has a problem with their **** glands then you can tell by them "scooting" (dragging their butt all over the floor) or licking their rear end a lot. Since you say that she has been licking it then maybe that was what was wrong all along.
Normally the **** glands are expressed when the dog takes a dump; the firm stool presses against the glands and forces the fluid to be released. If the puppy has runny stool then there is not enough pressure to release the fluid so it does not get released.
It is quick and cheap at the vet (about $20 w/o antibiotics) so give it a try and good luck!
