Problems with shots.

Well sampson is 16 months/ish and i had to take him for his shots again. He is terrible for shots. Today they could only give him one and that was it. no blood could be taken for heartworm test or the reset of his vacs. the vet has given us some tranquilizers to use on him next time in hope of calming him down. He is a good boy and good with people and dogs but becomes super aggresive with shots. Distraction does no good and his growling and such is pretty scary to the vet or tech trying to give the shot. Any ideas?
There is no holding him still due to the fact that he is a very strong lean rottie boy.

Nope, sorry we don't have that problem here - we have a problem with places in town! I can imagine a 16 month old howling rottie to be very scary indeed....

How is he when he goes to the vet for other things? Is it being at the vets he doesn't like or simply the shots? I was wondering if you could take him to the vets for a visit and not have any treatment done so that you get him used to going there?

do you think that he would let you give him the shots? I do that with my dogs. I buy my vaccines from the vet and give them myself. The dogs seem to be alot calmer this way. The only one I can't do is the rabies do to state law the vet has to give this one. It would be worth giving it a try

Get ahold of a syringe, the same size or larger that the Vet will use and desensitize him with it. Do not use a needle just the syringe and just tap him with it on the legs and the back, go slow start with him smelling it, getting use to it, rub him with it and once he is comfortable with that start the tapping, again start slow and just a couple of taps and increase that as he will tolerate it. Use praise and maybe even some biscuits to reinforce his good behaviour for tolerating it.

Should help.

I'm very lucky but my dogs are really good and not allergic to anything!.
I take them to Petco and do all the shots, there, for a very reasonable price.
