Possible Adoption of Puppy with Disfigurement

During my monthly visit to Petsmart yesterday, there was a rescue group with dogs and puppies for adoption. The one that broke my heart was an adorable 3 month old beagle mix- they have no idea what he is mixed with. One of his front paws was deformed at birth- his paw is sideways. They are collecting money to have his foot amputated! I asked if there was a possiblity that his foot could be saved by resetting it, they just said no with no explaination..I asked if I could hold him and they rudley told me no, I could not take him out of his cage. This is crazy! I am genuinly interested in adopting this puppy no matter if he has 3 or 4 legs and they were rude! How do they expect to adopt them out?? Ok enough of my venting...my question is has anyone heard of this type of deformity? Do you think they chose to amputate because it will be a less expensive surgery? I feel so sorry for this pup, I want to help him.

Alimel.....if you are interested in adopting this pup then why is PetSmart holding back? I would think ALL types of amputations are different and so are costs. Before we were married my husbands beloved Beagle had cancer of the leg. After three different vets (one vet told my husband it was snake bite) my husband took Buddy to a vet that took one look at the dig and said sorry sir, your dog has cancer. For weeks on end my husband drove into Dallas to Buddy could see a doggie oncologist. Buddy had radiation and chemo but the cancer had spread too far and too fast. My husband brought up amputation. The oncologist told him 2500.00 and that was almost 4 years ago. If you want that pup at PetSmart go get him. If they will not let you adopt him I would make such a big stink!

I dont think it was petsmart but a rescue group?? My guess is one reason they wouldnt let you adopt him is... How many pyschos (not saying you are sweetie) would be interested in a pup like that for dog fighting, baiting your name it.... Hopefully he finds a good home!

Oh I would just go in and tell them what you think, then they might tell you more about the situation.

Thanks guys, yes this is a rescue group that bring their adoptable pets to Petsmart. They are called Animal Aid...I am not happy with their practices, I called and left a message for the owner or director. Hopefully we will get this resolved and the little guy will be living with us soon! You can see him on their website animal-aid.com - he is listed under the name of Brownie.

Well my husband once owned a three-legged Beagle and from what he told me, there is truth to the saying that "God gave dogs three legs and one extra". It slows them down but really they can have a good life, run and play almost like other dogs.
My guess is the probme with setting it is that it takes 8 weeks for a bone to heal and you cannot put a dog's paw in a cast. I suppose you could maek the dog wear an e-collar for that long but probably because of the ease with which a dog adapts to having three legs they opted for the easiest solution.

A local rescue group that brings their dogs & cats to one of the pet here is really rude too.
I think they can be picky without being rude to everyone! They've NEVER said anything to me in 20 years in a nice tone. On more than one occasion it's made me not support them! There are thousands of homeless dogs & cats in this region on any given day. I too would like to be treated with respect & have no idea how they adopt any one of their kids out with their rude bedside manner!!
Back to the puppy... I've seen quite a few of seemingly very happy 3 legged dogs around here over the years. Playing fetch & running around. One lives about a quarter mile from me. If you really want him - go for it and good luck with his rescue!!

I've known countless 3 legged dogs and they do wonderfully! Our humane society here has a darling young dog with a very deformed from leg, they are going to amputate and have willing homes lining up for him. I agree some of the rescue groups probably do not have as many "people skills" as they have "animal skills" and it doesn't help them.
