HELP - My dogs has eaten recalled food...

What do I do?

Between my St. Bernard and 6 mo. old mutt puppy, they have had 1 1/2 cans of the Nutro Max recalled food. I cannot find out any info and I am very nervous tonight. I have them in with me tonight and am watching them closely. I am so nervous I can't sleep.

If they get sick, can the vets do anything? I'm not clear from news reports....anyone know what I can do? Is the illness connected to how much of the tainted food they eat or can 1 svg. really hurt them?

Any comments would help me - I'll be up all night anyway!

Thanks

If I were you I'd call an Emergency Vet and see what they recommend you do. They should have the information of what exactly the recalled food can do to your pet.

I fed my Rott 2 tablespoons of the Nutro Max Natural Choice for a few weeks. I went on Nutro's website as I was not able to get through on the 800 number and the website for Menufoods is vauge. The only thing that gave me a little relief is that Nutro states that none of the illnesses have been documented from animals that were fed Nutro products. I do not know if this is true......I am thinking of calling my vet to get him in for blood work just in case. He has no symptoms but it may be too late once they show symtons..don't you think?

I don't think the vets would even know what to do in this case. I work at one and i know my doctor was trying to find out all day today what exactly was causing everything and how and why this is causing kidney failure but the company isn't giving out very detailed information which he was getting very angry about. If your pets arent acting lethargic or drinking excessively then you prbably have nothing to worry about but you can give the vet a call if it makes you feel better they might know a little more by now.

I work at my local animal hospital in Canada, Ontario and Yes probably 1 can of dog food could hurt them and they might not show signs right away kidney failure is usually a long term disease that comes out when ur least expecting it. but in this case its coming out quick. you should still take your dog into the veterinarian and have bloodwork and a urine sample taken to elimate them from having kidney failure. ask for a CBC and Comprehensive profile... Do not send the bloodwork away it takes to long to figure out what is going on and by then it could be to late.. if your dog is having kidney failure the veterinarian will hook them up on IV fluids and be monitered very closely and they will try to feed your dog a brand of dog food called KD which is kidney diet to try and slow down the process once your dog gets kidney disease it will always have kidney disease it is a life long problem and alot of money to monitor.. If I was you I would find out soon and if your dog does have kidney failure contact the dog food company so you can arrange a hearing to talk to them about what they are going to do for you and possible think about suing...

Alright, first and formost, make absolutly certain that your dog's truly consumed the recalled products. This manufacturer produces quite a few products and not all are being recalled. You can check here: http://www.menufoods.com/recall/product_dog.html

Second, you should be aware that consumption of these products does not automatically mean that your dogs will get ill. According to their report, the number of complaints has been relatively small, meaning that there is a good chance that your dogs will not be affected.

Next, do what you have been doing: Watch your dogs for signs of loss of appetite, lethargy, etc.

Also, keep trying 1-866-895-2708 to get more accurate information if you feel completely uncertain.

I do not think that you need to contact your emergency vet quite yet. Keep the number handy and keep an eye on your dogs.

If you need absolute peace of mind, have the dogs's kidney functions tested by your regular vet.
