I was like ummmm... lets wait on that I will need to save up! Then I asked about getting our cats spayed.....110$ PER CAT!!! dh is saying "NO NO NO" we will tie them up outside bla bla bla... yeah like that is going to keep a male away.. MEN!

It's really tough having pets today. Especially with routine medical visits. I have read how some in the forum do not care for Banfield, but two of our dogs are on their insuarance plan. They take out about 35.00 a month out of our checking. We never have to pay for office vists, spay or neutering (even though it is a one time deal) fecal teasting 2 x a year, deworming 2x a year, all puppy and rabie shots are included, also two teeth cleanings that include anesthesia, 2 ear cleanings plus a discount on meds. You may want to check into that plan. Our older dog is 14 and she goes to the vet down the street from us. His visits are close to 75.00 just to walk in, but with this dogs age I am comfortable with that. (Not financially! but ok.)

Reason we set up a fund specifically for vet bills. Any excess money for the past several years has been going into it. Out of it we've paid $500 before for just 1 guinea pig. For the large pets it can reach the $1000s. It's something not enough people think about. Vet bills aren't a maybe when you get an animal. They are a given and should be planned for just like you plan whether you can afford to buy their food. There is pet insurance now but when we looked it up it was $40 per animal per month which might be fine for 1 dog but with 13animals not counting the horses(different insurance company for that) the amount we'd spend per year would be greater than what the actual vet bills are likely to be. Much better to just put away money every month even if it's only $10 because eventually it's going to be needed at least once in every animal's lifetime.

Very often the Humane Society or another organization will spay/neuter for a reduced price. Please contact your local shelter and find out. As to hip evals I suggest that you contact several vets i.e. shop around and look for the lowest cost possible.
Good luck, EG |

For hip x-ray,it's really not that expensive.
I paid 300$,to OFA Titus'hip & elbow and send them,awy. The spaying is not that bad,either. |

Do try to contact your local ASPCA (or corresponding agency). Many offer reduced rates to those who cannot afford the high prices. Vets there are just as qualified and highly trained as anywhere else and service can be outstanding.

I have 2 vet offices. One for standard care ie: vaccines, checkups, teeth cleaning, spay/neuter and general basics. The other is for emergencies & specialized care. It saves me alot of $ for general care so I have more available for those unfortunate "special times".
Also, I don't think those rates are that bad- especially the s/n! I have to check with the xray. Most areas do have a place that offers lower cost alteration as well. Good luck & don't let the boyfriend sway you... It's important for their health & life! |
