Imp. info for dogs going through anethesia
Acepromazine is considered dangerous for dogs.
A friend of mine lost her dog because of that Please ask yr vet about this if yr dog is going to go through surgery. www.topline-boxers.com/ace.html |

Poppy is allergic to this - as we found out when they tried to spay her the first time! I brought her home and during the course of the evening and next morning she got more and more agitated
she didn't have any physical signs (like heart racing) but she was extremely distressed. Apparently it can have that effect on some dogs but it's not common. Poppy was given valium to calm her down and then she was fine... but now they have made a note not to give her this anymore. Sorry to hear that your friend's dog didn't make it. |

I know pyr's are usually sensitive to anesthesia's too - they have a slow metabolism and usually need less than another dog of their weight. When looking for a vet, I always recommend finding a vet that is familiar with your breed. I know when I was looking for a vet, I'd call and ask if they had any great pyrenees patients - I had one vet say 'a what pyrenees' so I hung up, I had another say 'um..... those are the big white ones, right?' so I passed that one up, when I got to my vet they said 'surprisingly we have quite a few that come here'. Guess who I went with

Dignity....I am very lucky with my vet. She had a great pyr for many years so she knows the breed. One time I had to drop Oso off in the morning for all day testing. The vet came in later and said to the vet tech...."who do we have in here today?" The vet tech responded, " a few puppies, a kitten, and a big ole horse!" (That horse was my Oso! hahahaha.) Thanks so much for this post Golden. It isn't until some dogs are under anesthesia that the vets realize that there is going to be trouble.

The breeds that are "brachycephalic" (flat faced) are at risk, like Pugs, Boston Terriers etc.
