Question
I hope this doesn't sound like a stupid question, but the other day I bought my girl Maia some new bones. I got her one of those that look like they have been bleached and are stuffed with something in the middle. I just wondered if it was safe for her. When she was chewing on it, I notices that she was chewing sliver like pieces off it. I took the bone away cause I was afraid that the pieces would be sharp and cut her mouth or throat. Is this a dangerous kind of bone for her to have, or will she digest this type of bone ok. She really did like the bone, but I wanted to check and see what you guys think. Thanks! Kathy and Maia

No question is stupid kshort. You did the right thing by taking the bone/bones away. I would have given Maia some type of kibble to take her mind off the bone. Let's face it, when pieces of silver or any other material is coming off the bone that should not be there I would get rid of it. You did well!

I'm sorry-I didn't mean silver, the metal, I meant that when she chewed it "slivers of the bone" were chewed off. I didn't know if it is ok to let her swallow them. Thanks! Kathy

If its a real bone, and slivers are coming off, I would say thats not a good thing. They can get lodged.

If your dog is getting slivers, yes take it away. It can be the way your dog is eating that specific type of bone.
my mom and I each bought ours dogs the exact same bone. Mine would chew on it forever and be fine. Hers was breaking the exact same bone into splinters. It could just be the way she is eating it. |

Raw bones won't splinter get her one of those at the butchers.

I would take the bone away and get her non-cooked bones b/c they don't splinter as easy. Hope all goes well.

Thanks everyone-I'll try to get her a bone from the butcher-none of my dogs have ever had real bones. What do you suggest I ask for at the butcher? Thanks for your help! Kathy and Maia

I've had trouble with the sawn bones that are touted for raw meaty diet. My Golden Ret. has jaws of steel and can crack off huge chunks so I gave up on those.
I go to the butchers and ask for large hock joint bones and feed these whole, he can't crunch them up. |

That's how Maia is-she seems to be able to chew through anything. Luckily she has never chewed anything of mine-just her toys. I'll go to the butcher and see if he has the kind of bone you suggest. She would probably love it. Thanks for your help. Kathy and Maia
