Joint Supplements for Dogs. . .

I have two aussies that take their 'jobs' very seriously. They run with me on pavement a few times a week and play fetch relentlessly with lots of fast stops/starts and turns. They are young dogs now but I'm afraid that the wear and tear will show up later in their joints. I'm wondering if glucosamine, chondroiten and/or alpha licolic acid (forgive the spelling) supplements given now might might have preventative benefits or if these things only help to repair already damaged joints.

Thanks!

I bought some hip joint supplement at petsmart for my larger dog because sometimes he acts like he has hip issues. Unfortunately I can't remember the name of the brand or what it was called ^^;; I gave him one cube a day and it seemed to help out some.
But I'm not sure if they could actually help to keep them from getting issues later on. Sorry I couldn't help out more :\

I have given it to Star since she was 9 months old because of the surgery on her shoulder. She will be kept on this for the rest of her life. The vet recomended that I give it to Angel also so she wont have hip problems in the future. Since her hips joint was not set correctly.

I think the problem is that nobody really seems to know which part of the claims about these food additives are true and which ones are purely marketing to get you to buy the product.

My Border Collie used to be super active and was with me 24 hours a day - we lived VERY active lives with at least 8 hours a day of hard activities (running, bicycling, sheep herding, hiking, playing basketball with the neighbor's kidsetc.). None of it affected his joints - at least not until he was about six when he had an accident and was partially paralyzed. In other words, I can only tell you that until that age, no intensity of activity affected his joints.

To be on the save side I always add a bit of Missing Link Plus (with glucosamine) to my pups food daily. It is great for their coats too!

Yeah, I agree with you. Reid had shoulder surgery with a cartilege flap and some dead bone tissue removed. I talked with the people who make http://nuprosupplements.com/ and the product will help with the repair and healing, but it's not needed. Their supplement is meant to fill in the holes that can be found in any diet... even the best holistic diets. From what I understand, some dogs digest things differently than others and may not be getting all the nutrients that they need from their dry dog food. The supplements are meant to fill in those gaps.
