Rosco The Lab Is My New "injured" Foster

This is Rosco, an 11mo old yellow lab. His owner ran over him with his truck (accidently) and did not immediately get him to a vet. When he did get him there and they did xrays, told the owner he had a very bad break in the hemor, he said to put him down. The vet said no and he had the man sign him over. The vet found another hospital that could/would perform the surgery. By this time, his leg had been broken for 5 days.
As aweful as this sounds, it may have been a blessing in diguise for this guy. He's huge anyway and is overweight on top of that. Plus when petting him a few minutes after we got him into my house, I found a huge tick behind his ear! ick! Can't give him anything til I contact both vets to see if they've already given him anything for it on Monday.
He is now healing comfortably at my house. Best news of all is a vet tech at the first hospital is already interested in adopting him. He was a dream to work with they all said during all of his care at both hospitals, so he'll be much better off with someone who will genuinly love and care about him.

he looks quite a bit older than 11 months. but, he also looks like a real sweetheart.

it's kind of funny - ticks are such a way of life around here, it wouldn't bother me. i'd light a match, blow it out, and stick the match against the tick's butt while it's still hot. it causes them to release their hold and you can get them off easier. if you try it, and get the tick, make sure you flush it. don't just throw it away.

How can anyone run over their dog and wait to take him to the vet???

I'm so glad this guy gets a second chance for a family that loves him.

He's a beautiful dog but looks so pathetic in the second picture. I just want to give him a big juicy steak to make him feel better.

If you want to remove the tick don't try to use a match, vasoline, petroleum jelly, nail polish remover or alcohol to get the tick to detach. They excrete a sort of cement that adheres them to their host so even if they let go, the cement would hold them in place.

To remove a tick, get a pair of long nose tweezers and make sure you grasp the tick as close to the dog's skin as possible. Try not to squeeze the tick other than where you are grasping it next to the skin. This site gives an illustration of how to grasp the tick.

I ure hope everything goes well for the little guy helook o sweet and doesn't deserve any or what has happened to him. Also Heart Song even though the site says that the matchabnd other methods don't work doesn't mean it is rue I have een everal people do it with the match and has worked everytime, but not to say that the tweezer don't wor either because they do but I think it would be more painful.

Actually, that site wasn't what I was getting my information from. I was using information from a few lectures we had in my Parasitology class.
