First time..

I've worked with groomers before but today I am clipping Buster myself for the first time. (LOL yes you all will get pictures of the soon-to-be hideous old boy)

One thing I'm wondering, since all the groomers I've worked with have done things differently is.. Do I bathe him before I clip him, or after?

okay, thanks.

What is the reasoning for bathing them afterwards? Is it because they fluff up and you can get the 'fuzzies' that you missed the first time around?

No, what happens is the fur joins together when you bathe and can make it hard to clip, you have to make sure they are extremely dry, or the clippers won't go through.
Depends on how long the coat is and how much you brush them out. If they have any matts on the fur, these will actually bond more and go right to the skin.

The old rule used to be bathe first cause any dirt will blunt your clippers. Just so long as you rinse them in oil frequently while clipping they will be fine.
Want to know anymore just ask, you know I'm a retired groomer.

I would think you could wash away all the hair clippings for one thing. There are probably more reasons (like my dogs get really wound up after a bath).

Well I did 'round one'.. I haven't smoothed everything out really well but he probably feels much better without all that gross, stinky hair.
Thanks for the help Ellie!

SouthPaw, my dogs get wound up after a bath too.. They run around and roll on the floor.

I bathe him before, because the clippers get ruin, when I have a dirty dog, one of my dog is a outdoor dog, so he alwasys dirty. I bathe the before and than brush them out.
Also the clipper works better when your dog is clean.

But, you can clip your dog dirty, but make sure the clipper get dipped in oil and cleaned out.

LOL dobermom he doesn't look good at all. I did what mom wanted me to do, and shaved him, but he looks silly IMO. She thinks he looks cute, but she'd call him cute no matter what, so that's not a fair evaluation.
Is it OK if I give you guys some pictures in a few days once his fur is grown out a teensy bit?
