A stray followed me home *update*

So we were at the park and this sweet little girl followed me home. She's got a flat collar and a flea collar, but no tags. So Right now, she's in my backyard. She was pretty dirty, so I brushed her out and bathed her. Gave her a bowl of food.

The thing is, I can't keep her and I don't have time to try and find her owners. So I am going to take her to the local shelter tomorrow. But I don't want them to euthanize her (I think they give the dogs 4 days at this shelter), so I'm going to tell them to call me if no one claims her and they can't adopt her out and I'll go back and get her and contact one of the local rescue organizations to see if they can't find a foster home for her-- unless anyone on here wants to foster her

She's a really sweet dog, seems very eager to please. Seems pretty mellow. Has probably been an outside dog, so I don't know if she's house trained or not. And I don't know if she's up to date on her vaccinations or if she's on heartworm preventative. I also couldn't find a spay scar.

Here are some picture of her. What breed do you think she is? She's smaller than my two. Probably weighs around 30 pounds and her head comes up to about my knee (I'm only 5'4"):

Wow she looks like my brothers dog Jake, only bigger.
Are there homes by the park? Might be worth walking back with her and seeing if anyone is looking. Poor girl, she sure is a cutie!

The park is in the middle of 3 neighborhood editions. There's no way I can knock on everyone's door... and it's huge park, so even if I did just the houses on the perimeter of the park, it would be at least 100 houses. I did go up and down part of the the closest street on the side of the park that we found the dog on. I knocked on every 4th door or so, thinking that someone might at least recognize her. Nobody did. So we are going to print posters with her picture and the shelter's number and post them at a few of the local vets and the major entrances to the neighborhood. We'll have her at the shelter, but it's not a no kill shelter, and I won't let her be euthanized. So I will talk to people at my training club and I will talk with a few of the local rescue groups. Hopefully we will find someone who can at least foster her. I don't know what to do if we can't. Reasonably and legally speaking I can't keep her. My 4 animals keep me so busy as it is. I don't have time for a 5th animal. Plus, city ordinances say no more than 2 dogs unless you have a litter of puppies and then you can only have more than 2 dogs for up to 90 days.

You might want to consider putting a Found Ad in the newspaper. They are usually free in most papers.
She's awefully cute! I'd foster her for sure if she were closer. There always seems to be room for another nice dog in need. Please do contact any rescues around you. That's a much better option IMO that a shelter anyday. Good luck and thank you for not just leaving her out in the streets!

I want to let the shelter keep her long enough to see if someone will claim her. If no one claims her and her time at the shelter runs out, I will go back and pick her up. Hopefully, by then I will have a foster home lined up for her. I just can't be a foster home (which is why she'll have to stay at the shelter for a few days)... I don't have enough time to be able give the appropriate care to my own AND a foster dog. It wouldn't be fair to any of the animals involved (or myself for that matter).

You could always post flyers at the park/around saying 'found dog at shelter' and give a general description and just say she's been turned into the shelter.

that's our plan, digs... we're just not going to leave her there if she doesn't get claimed or adopted.

As heartless as it sounds some people deliberately dump their dogs at the park knowing that someone will be walking through there eventually and will hopefully pick up the dog and take it home. I was a wintess to this last October. My husband and I were taking two out of three dogs to "barktoberfest." We pulled up with our two dogs and a young man walked over to me and asked if the dog was mine. It was a beauty well fed rottie, but no tags, no collar, no nothing. Someone had "dropped" the dog at the park the night before KNOWING that Barktoberfest would be starting the following day. It all wound up well though. By the time we left the festivites the young man had taken the dog over to where they specialize in Rotties and a couple had adopted her. I sure hope you find the owner. Good luck and please keep us posted sue.

Well I took her to the shelter yesterday late afternoon. I had a really hard time leaving her there... she was begging me not to... kept reaching up at me with her paws.

But the good news is that the shelter called me today and said that her owner came and picked her up! So she's back home now! It's a happy ending.
