I have a 8 week old Yorkie who was fine with me for 4 days. Very full of life, playful, and happy. He suddenly had what looked to be a siezure. He had 7 of these episodes in 7-8 hours. He siezed up, urinated, deficated, and acted as if he had a hair ball throwing his head side to side never loosing conciousness but drowling a lot. He then runs to food bowl and eats like crazy drinks and acts very disoriented. He whimpers and acts very lethargic. No fever, stool tested negative for everything, pink gums, and no change in stool consistancy.UTD on shots. He has stopped having the "episodes" but still acts lethargic and uncomfortable. He did not get into anything potentially harmful besided grabbing a mouth full of bird poop outside. Can he be reacting to bird poop? I purchased him from reputable breeded and I have another female and 2 years old perfect health and my sister, and friend also have yorkies from this breeder. She took him back after his episodes and offered $$ back or another puppy but I want this one! I just want to know what is causing this and if anyone else has experianced similar actions from thier puppies?
SHe calls me with updates and says he is up and eating now, he had stopped eating after 4th episode, and is acting a little better but not 100%. SHe asked to keep him for a few days to watch him and help nurse him back to health even though she after 10 years of breeding has never seen anything quite like this. I agreed being she knows more about raising pups than I do even though I feel pretty knowledgable about puppies this one has me totally miffed. I am just devastated and sick over this puppy.

Any puppy/dog having what appears to be seizures should immediately be taken to a vet. You don't mention anything about a vet's involvement in your post.

Did you asked the vet about what might be causing the problem and if i was you if the lady offer to give me another pup in place of that one i would take it i know that you have alreadly bonded with it but you are talking about a lot of vet bills and meds if she has siezures and might not live that long and to me that would just kill me amd if the lady you got her from was a good breader she would keep her and not sell her to anyone else i know i would she would be my very special little girl

Could be numerous things from low sugar to liver shunt to bad food did she have him seen by vet? oh and yes they can get very ill from bird droppings but not that quickly or violently it's more of a disease that affects weight with parasitical issues.

Seriously.....I don't mean this to be cruel but I would not bring the pup back. I would have the breeder exchange the pup for another one or get your money back. You may be looking at a life tme of high cost vet bills and a possible shorter life expantancy in this pup. Sorry I could not make you smile and give you better news.

I know many toy dog breeders who will not let a pup go before 10wks because they are tiny and are prone to hypoglycemia. Did the vet run any tests? (glucose & liver enzyme come to mind) Before you refuse a refund or new pup you should get a proper diagnosis from a vet. What has the breeder offered as a possible issue? How small is the pup?
I wish you and the baby well. Please keep us updated. |

you need to take your pup to the vet. a first time seizure is a emergency vet situation. even in known epileptic dogs, more than one seizure right after the other needs a vets consultation straight away. there are many causes fo seizures, idiopathic epilepsy only being one of them. go straight to the vet and let us know how hes getting on.

I do agree that the first step is seeing a vet not the breeder.
Bosley's Slave in this forum has been riddled with seizures with her papillion. Perhaps you could look up some of her threads or PM her so she can share what she does or doesn't know about them. My sisters papillion had hypoglycimia(sp) when she first brought her home as well. Let us know how she's doing. |
