dry skin

I have a doberman who is 7 months old. He has very bad dry skin. I have tried different things nothing seems to help. Can someone help?

Diet plays a big part in skin condition. Be sure there is plenty of drinking water available at all times.

I'm not really familiar with that type of oil, but you want to be careful of what type an the amount you feed your dog. It will cause problems with your pet just like it would you.

In the past, we've used Flax Seed oil to supplement dog food. It's really good for the skin. You can get it in the natural foods section of the store. A lot of times it's refrigerated (definitely after you open it). We used a tablespoon or two a day.

Hi i'am new here ,Just thought this might help, my family puts a little bacon fat over dry food a couple times a week it helps w/flakes and gives a nice shine to the fur too. Another thing to try is for horses but i use on my dogs (tail and mane) shampoo and cond. it works very well for show dogs as well also great for wire haired breeds.....ps the shampoo & cond is great for permed and colored human hair to

Glad to see someone else is an advocate of good ole bacon fat!!! I posted that suggestion some weeks back. My mom always put it on the dogs food (unless she needed it for a good old pot of pinto beans!) Also, the flax seed oil is good for our skin as well. But, I have heard that the actual ground up seeds (or whole seeds) contain more of the benefits of flax than the oil because of the processing to make the oil. I sprinkle some on my cereal from time to time. A tablespoon or two on the dog food could be beneficial.

What kind of dog food do you feed? I feed my dogs Canidae and it works wonders! helps with dry skin, itching, here are the ingredents:

Chicken meal, turkey meal, brown rice, white rice, lamb meal, chicken fat, menhaden fish meal, flax seed, sun cured alfalfa meal, sunflower oil, Lecithin, Brewers yeat, Natural flavors, monosodium Phosphate, Choline, Linoleic Acid, Rosemary extract, sage extract, ferrous sulfate, mixed tocopheriis, zinc oxide, sodium selenite, manganous oxide, riboflavin supplement, Yeast culture, Dried aspergillus niger fermentation extract and product, zinc amino acid chelate, cobate amino acicechelate, Iron amino acide chelate, Niacin, vitamin B12 and A supplement, Calcium, ladate, folic Acid....and some more...

But, the Sunflower Oil helps produce a beautiful skin and coat. The omega 6 and 3 helps improving the coat, help avoid hot spots, hair loss, helps allergy problems caused from flea bites, licking and from a fat imbalance.

It also has Amaranth which helps removes worms and parasites from the digestive tract.

I could go on and on about this great food. I would recomend it to anyone. I buy a 40 lbs of dog food for $40, and only feed my 80 lb rottie 2 and 1/2 cups per day. (or a little more if I am doing training)

Check the benefits of the dog food on this website. It has been Freckles diet since 6 weeks of age. (3 yrs. in Feb.) No skin problems, odor, breath odor, silky feeling coat. Fleas are not a problem... and I am talking a Texas country atmosphere!
