how to save $ on frontline plus

ok, let me start by saying I am not suggesting anything nor am I a medical professional. I have done some research and have discovered something that is saving me a ton of money and works just as well. I am sharing what I have learned, nothing more.

I had been spending a lot of money on frontline plus for my two dogs. Bernice weighs about 55lbs and Tank weighs about 60lbs. I was having to buy 24 doses of the large dog frontline plus per year. I was spending about $190 per year for the dogs' vaccine.

Then my mom told me something and I began looking some things up to get my facts straight.

here's what I learned.

this is the dosing amount for fronline plus (dogs)

11-22 lbs.
Contains 3 - 0.023 fl oz (0.67 mL) applicators

23-44 lbs.
Contains 3 - 0.045 fl oz (1.34 mL) applicators

45-88 lbs.
Contains 3 - 0.091 fl oz (2.68 mL) applicators


89-132 lbs.
Contains 3 - 0.136 fl oz (4.02 mL) applicators

so, about .001 fl oz per lb of dog if you go by the largest lb per size catagory.

my dogs fit in the large dog catagory, 45-88lbs but are on the low end of the scale. so, if bernice weighs 55lbs she should be getting about .055 fl oz of the medication/month; while tank, weighing 60lbs, should be getting about .060 fl oz of the medication/month.

.055 + .060 is still under the .136 fl oz amount in the extra large dog size dose of .136 fl oz. (all dosing has the exact same ingredients, listed as follows)

now that I am only buying 12 xtra large doses per year I am saving about $82.00/year and that's a lot of doggie toys!

I just open one x-lg dog packet per month and measure out the correct amount with a needless syringe. It is the exact same thing, only cheaper and they are not being flooded with extra uneeded medication.

I never knew B & T were so big lol One of them is equal to ALL 5 of mine and LuLu lol Actually the cats are each about 12lbs so they are bigger than everyone than Sharon and about equal to Oz.

Hmmmmm sounds like "I am not a doctor in real life but I play on on tv!" hahahahah. Thanks so much for the tip Bernice..unfortunately we bought ALL of our front line for the year and same with our heart worm meds.....that's why I'm eating remmen noodles tonight! hahahah (only kidding!) but thanks for making us aware...good post!

Mel weighs 115 pounds and Buddy weighs 30, I think I buy the largest size available for him I might be able to make that work!

There's a name for doing this, but I can't remember what it is. When I first heard of doing it last year, I called the manufacturer and asked them about it.

They gave me this big, long explanation about why this doesn't work. I wish I could remember it. No surprise they don't support it, but you may want to call them and at least hear them out.

I sent them an email just now to see what they had to say about this. I'll let you know as soon as I hear something.

I have two dogs with weights of 55lbs and 60lbs. I have been buying the extra large dog dose and splitting it in half for each of the dogs.

After looking at the ml per dose for my dogs with the lg dog frontline plus and the ml per dose on the xtra large dog dose, it seems to be the same in ml.

I was advised by a friend that your company discourages this type of "splitting" and I am wondering what medical or scientific reason your company states for a pet owner not to do this? It is the same ingredients, the same ml per dose and the only difference I can see is that, pardon my bluntness, your company does not make as much money.

I just spent $102.03 yest for 6 tubes. The kids all weigh diff so they all have to have thier own seperate. I can't even get the 1 free!!! If you buy a 6 pack of the same size, you get 1 free!!!

I have been told by a vet how to do this so that is why I do it.
